Function Description:

The HL77 Looper Pedal allows users to record, overdub, and play back phrases and loops. It features 99 phrase locations, providing 12 hours of record time, and includes 20 backing rhythm tracks in 3/4 or 4/4 time signatures. The pedal supports USB connection for importing and exporting phrases, making it easy to manage and share audio data. It offers 1/4" instrument and control inputs, as well as 1/8" stereo input for sampling external sources. Dual 1/4" outputs provide flexible connection options. The HL77 operates on a 9-volt battery (not included) or an optional AC power adapter. Its rugged, die-cast design ensures durability for live performance and studio use.

Usage Features:

  • Selecting a Memory Location: Users can cycle through 99 memory locations using the PATTERN UP and DOWN arrows. The display shows the current memory number, with a dot indicating if data is present.
  • Recording a Phrase: Press the footswitch to start recording. The REC indicator will light red.
  • Auto Recording Mode: The pedal starts recording the moment it detects an input signal. To enable this mode, select an empty memory location, then press and hold the STOP MODES button for 2 seconds until "Ar" flashes in the display. Press the STOP MODES button again while "Ar" is flashing to enable Auto Recording Mode.
  • Overdubs: After a loop is recorded, new phrases can be layered on top. Press the footswitch until the PLAY and DUB indicators light up. The default sequence is Record - Play - Overdub, which can be changed to Record - Overdub - Play.
  • Undo/Redo/Clear:
    • UNDO: During overdubbing or playback, hold down the footswitch for 2 seconds to undo or cancel the most recent overdubbed recording.
    • REDO: During playback, press and hold the footswitch for 2 seconds to restore the overdubbed audio that was just canceled.
    • CLEAR: When the audio is stopped, press and hold the footswitch for 2 seconds to clear audio that has not been saved.
  • Stopping Playback: Double-press the footswitch (press twice within 1 second) to stop the audio.
  • Stop Modes: The HL77 offers three Stop Modes:
    • "St": Audio stops instantly when the footswitch is double-pressed.
    • "Fr": Audio stops at the end of the current loop when the footswitch is double-pressed.
    • "FA": Audio fades out and stops within 10 seconds when the footswitch is double-pressed.
    • To select a Stop Mode, press the STOP MODES button before or during playback.
  • Saving a Loop: After creating a loop, short press the SAVE button. "SA" will start flashing on the display. Press the PATTERN UP or DOWN buttons to choose an empty memory location, then press the SAVE button again to confirm and write the recording to internal memory.
  • Copying a Loop: Choose the memory location of the loop to copy. Short press the SAVE/DELETE button. The location number in the display will start to flash. Press the PATTERN UP or DOWN buttons to select an empty memory location. Press the SAVE/DELETE button to confirm the selection and save the recording to the new memory location.
  • Deleting a Loop: Press and hold the SAVE/DELETE button for 2 seconds. "dL" will start flashing on the display. Press the SAVE/DELETE button again to confirm deleting the recording.
  • External Control Pedals: Connect external control pedals to the CTRL IN jack for hands-free control. A momentary pedal is recommended.
    • Stop: Press the external pedal once to stop during recording, overdubbing, and playback. This is the same function as double-pressing the HL77 footswitch.
    • Tap Tempo: Press the external pedal repeatedly to set the tempo while the HL77 is not playing a loop.
    • Clear Loop: Press and hold the external pedal to clear all of the recordings that have not been saved.
    • PATTERN UP: Short press the external pedal.
    • PATTERN DOWN: Press the external pedal twice within 1 second.
  • Playing the Rhythm Track: Press the RHYTHM or TAP TEMPO button to turn on the rhythm track. Adjust the volume with the RHYTHM knob. The TAP TEMPO button flashes to indicate the tempo.
  • Selecting a Rhythm: Press and hold the RHYTHM button for 2 seconds. The pattern number will start flashing. Press the PATTERN UP and DOWN buttons to choose a pattern.
  • Setting the Tempo of the Rhythm Track: The tempo can be set before starting recording or overdubbing. When playing back a saved loop or phrase, the tempo can be changed by pressing the TAP TEMPO button at the desired tempo rate.
  • Setting the Time Signature: The time signature can be changed before recording a loop or phrase. The default time signature for each memory location is 4/4. To change it, select an empty memory location, turn on the rhythm track, press and hold the TAP TEMPO button until the display reads "4b", then press the PATTERN UP or DOWN button to switch between "4b" and "3b". Press the TAP TEMPO button to confirm.

Maintenance Features:

  • Connecting to Your Computer: The HL77 can be connected to a Mac or Windows computer via a mini USB cable to backup or load phrases (as WAV files). The pedal will display "U 5" when successfully connected.
    • Importing WAV Files: Open the HL77 Removable Disk, then the HARTKE folder. The WAV folder contains 99 folders for the 99 memory locations. To load a sample, select a memory number (e.g., W002), rename the WAV file to w002.wav, and drag it into the folder.
    • Backing up files: Copy the entire HARTKE folder from the HL77 to your computer.
    • Overwrite/Recover backed up data: Delete all folders within the HL77 root directory. Copy the HARTKE folder from your computer to the HL77 root directory.
    • Important Notes for Computer Connection: The HL77 will not operate on USB power. The SAVE/DELETE button flashes when data is being transferred. Do not turn off the power or disconnect the cable during data processing. Do not delete folders inside the HL77 drive unless you are overwriting or recovering data. Do not place more than one WAV file in any folder. When naming files, use uppercase and lowercase characters (A-Z, a-z), numbers (0-9), or underscore (_).
  • Powering the HL77: When running on battery power, connect an instrument cable into the OUT L jack to automatically switch the power on. To prevent damage, always turn down the volume and turn off all devices before making any connections.
  • Installing a Battery: Install a standard 9-volt battery by removing the battery door and attaching the battery to the terminal connector. Fit the battery into the compartment and reinstall the battery door.
  • Using an AC/DC Power Adapter: Use an adapter to power the HL77. Plug the power adapter into the DC inlet and then plug the power adapter into a standard AC power outlet.
  • Self-Test: The HL77 will take a few seconds to run a self-test and display "SC" when powering on. Once completed, the HL77 will be ready to operate.
