UNDERSTANDING YOUR CHAINSAW SAFETY
DEVICES
Low kick-back saw chain
Alow-kick-backsawchainisachainwhichhasmetthe
kickbackperformancerequirements.
The rakers (depth gauges) ahead of each cutter can
minimisetheforceofakick-backreactionbypreventing
the cutters from digging in too deeply at the kick-back
zone. Only use replacement chain that is equivalent to
theoriginalchainorhasbeencertiedasalowkick-back
chain.
Assawchainsaresharpened,theylosesomeofthelow
kickbackqualitiesandextracautionisrequired.

Theintegralbumperspikemaybeusedasapivotwhen
makingacut.
Guide bars
Generally, guide bars with small radius tips have
somewhatlowerkick-backpotentials.
Chain brake
See gure 3.
Chainbrakesaredesignedtoquicklystopthechainfrom
rotating.Whenthechainbrakelever/handguardispushed
towards the bar, the chain should stop immediately. A
chainbrakedoesnotpreventkick-back.Thechainbrake
shouldbecleanedandtesteddaily.Referto“operation”
laterinthismanualforadditionalinformation.

WARNING
Even with daily cleaning of the mechanism, the
dependability of a chainbrake to perform under eld
conditionscannotbecertied.
WARNING
Kick-back occurs when the moving chain contacts
an object atthe upper portion of the tipof the guide
barorwhenthe woodclosesinandpinchesthesaw
chaininthecut.Contactattheupperportionofthetip
of theguide bar may causethe chain to diginto the
objectandstopthe chainforaninstant.Theresult is
alightning-fast,reversereactionwhichkickstheguide
barupandbacktowardstheoperator.Ifthesawchain
ispinchedalongthetopoftheguidebar,theguidebar
canbedrivenrapidlybacktowardstheoperator.Either
ofthesereactionsmaycauseyoutolosecontrolofthe
saw,whichcouldresultinseriousinjury.
Donotrelyexclusivelyuponthesafetydevicesbuiltinto
yoursaw. Asa chainsawuser, you shouldtake several
stepstokeepyourcuttingjobsfreefromaccidentorinjury.
KICK-BACK PRECAUTIONS
See gure 4 - 5.
Rotational kick-back (A) occurs when the moving chain
contacts an object at the kick-back danger zone (B)
of the guide bar. The result is a lightning-fast, reverse
reactionwhichkickstheguidebarupandbacktowards
theoperator.Thisreactioncancauselossofcontrolwhich
mayresultinseriousinjury.
WARNING
Skating - when the chainsaw fails to dig in during a
cut, the guide bar canbegin hopping or dangerously
skiddingalongthesurfaceofthelogorbranch,possibly
resulting in the loss of control of the chainsaw. To
preventorreducetheskating,holdthechainsawwith
twohandsandmakesurethesawchainestablishesa
grooveforcutting.
WARNING
Bouncing-nevercutsmall,exiblebranchesorbrushes
withyourchainsaw.Theirsizeandexibilitycaneasily
causethesawtobouncetowardsyouorbindupwith
enoughforcetocauseakickback.Thebesttoolforthat
kindofworkisahandsaw,pruningshears,anaxeor
otherhandtools.
