Contact Breaker Point Gap
1. Remove the point and generator co vers.
2. Open the contact breaker points <D
with finger or small sc r ew driver blade
and check for p it t in g. If pitted or
burned, the points shoul d be replaced
and the co nd enser checked. A gray
discoloration is normal and can be re-
moved with a point fil e. Filing should
be done carefu ll y a nd kept to a mini-
mum. Clean the point contacts after
filing
with a clean piece of unwaxed
paper such as a business card or
chemical point cleaner.
3. Rotate the gene rat or rotor in the
counterclockwise direction (see arrow )
to find the po i nt where each breaker
point gap is at maximum and check
us
in g a clearance gauge.
4. The standard gap is 0.012-0.016 in.
(0.3-0.4 mm ).
5. When adju stme nt is necessary, loosen
the contact breaker plate lock ing screws
®and move the contact breaker plate
to achieve the co rrect gap. Whe n pro-
perly gapped, retighten the lo cking
sc r ews:._ @.
