Overview

The ADEMCO 5816 Door/Window Transmitter is a wireless device designed to enhance the security of a property by detecting the opening of doors or windows. This transmitter is compatible with 5800 series wireless technology, ensuring seamless integration into existing security systems. Its primary function is to provide two unique zones of detection, offering versatile monitoring capabilities.

One of the key usage features of the 5816 is its dual-zone capability. It includes a magnetic reed switch with a maximum 1/2-inch gap for detecting the opening of a door or window (Loop 2). Additionally, it features a wired normally closed contact (Loop 1), allowing for the connection of an external wired sensor. This flexibility means that either or both zones can be utilized depending on the specific security needs of the installation. For instance, the magnetic reed switch can be used to monitor the main opening of a door, while the wired loop can be connected to a secondary sensor on an adjacent window or another part of the same door.

Installation of the 5816 is designed to be straightforward. The transmitter's cover can be easily removed using a finger latch or a small screwdriver inserted into a pry-off slot. Once the cover is off, the mounting plate can be disengaged from the unit by releasing a locking tab. The device can be mounted either directly to a surface or by using the provided mounting plate. When used as a door contact, the 5816 should be mounted to the door frame, and its accompanying magnet (model 5899 or equivalent) should be mounted to the door itself, aligning with the marks on the transmitter. For wired loop connections, wires can be fed through a concealed wiring entry hole on the mounting plate or through a thin "breakout" area in the case wall, and then connected to the unit's terminals. If the wired loop is not used, no connection is necessary. For UL installations, any wired contact connected to Loop 1 must not be more than 3 feet from the transmitter.

Before permanent mounting, it is recommended to perform Go/No Go tests to verify adequate signal strength. This helps ensure reliable communication with the control panel and allows for reorientation or relocation of the transmitter if necessary. The device also features a built-in cover tamper switch, which activates if the cover is removed, providing an additional layer of security.

Maintenance features primarily revolve around battery replacement. The 5816 operates on a 3V Lithium battery. The manual provides clear instructions for battery installation and replacement, emphasizing the importance of observing correct polarity and using only specified battery types (Panasonic CR123A, Duracell DL123A, Sanyo CR123A, or ADEMCO 466). Users are cautioned about the risks associated with improper battery handling, such as fire, explosion, and burns, and are advised not to recharge, disassemble, heat above 212°F (100°C), or incinerate the batteries. Used batteries should be disposed of properly.

The 5816 is designed for easy serviceability. The use of a mounting plate, rather than direct surface mounting, is recommended for ease in removing the unit for servicing should it become necessary. After battery replacement or servicing, the cover can be reattached by engaging the hooks along one edge and snapping it shut.

For enrollment into the control panel, users are directed to refer to the control panel's documentation. For UL installations, the 5816 must be enrolled as Type "RF" (supervised RF). It is important not to mount the transmitter on or near metal objects, as this may affect transmission range. Additionally, it is good practice to avoid locating the transmitter near wiring for AC, telephone, HVAC, or computer data cables, as these can also interfere with performance.

The device's unique serial number, permanently assigned during manufacture, must be "enrolled" in the control panel before use. This ensures that the system recognizes and communicates with the specific transmitter. The product is assembled in Mexico and carries FCC and IC regulatory statements, indicating compliance with relevant standards for radio frequency devices. These statements advise users against unauthorized changes or modifications to the equipment, as such actions could void the user's authority to operate the device and may cause undesired operation or harmful interference. Regular maintenance and inspection, ideally annually by an installer, along with frequent user testing (at least weekly), are vital for the continuous satisfactory operation of any alarm system incorporating the 5816 transmitter.
