Energy Efficiency and the Environment
Home energy use is responsible for more than ¼ of the total UK carbon emissions
which contribute to climate change. Heating and hot water systems based on
boilers account for of this figure, so it is important to understand how your
controls can help to maximize energy efficiency while maintaining your comfort.
Your Programmer should be used in conjunction with appropriate temperature
controls. In order to save energy the following general points should be
observed:
1. Ensure your system contains a room thermostat and a hot water thermostat,
and that both are set to appropriate temperature levels: typically 20°C for the
room temperature and between 55 - 60°C for the hot water temperature.
2. Programme your heating and hot water to be off when you are not in the house.
If you are concerned about possible frost damage to any exposed pipe work, it
is advisable to fit a frost protection system – your installer can advise you about
this.
3. Think about how you use your domestic hot water – if you have a storage
system, it is not necessary to have this switched on all the time, even when you
are in the house.
4. Consider the heat up times required for your central heating. Every home
responds differently when the heating is switched on. Adjust the start time so
that you are not cold when you get up in the morning. A shorter heat up time is
required for other heating periods.
5. In the evening, when the house is up to temperature, it is often possible to
switch off the heating up to an hour before you go to bed, without any noticeable
reduction in comfort.

WHAT IS A PROGRAMMER?
...an Explanation for Householders
(as recommended by the Energy Savings Trust)
Programmers allow you to set ‘On’ and ‘Off’ time periods. Some models switch the central heating
and domestic hot water on and off at the same time, while others allow the domestic hot water
and heating to come on and go off at different times. Set the ‘On’ and ‘Off’ time periods to suit
your own lifestyle. On some programmers you must also set whether you want the heating and hot
water to run continuously, run under the chosen ‘On’ and ‘Off’ heating periods, or be permanently
off. The time on the programmer must be correct. Some types have to be adjusted in spring and
autumn at the changes between Greenwich Mean Time and British
Summer Time. You may be able to temporarily adjust the heating
programme, for example, ‘Override’, ‘Advance’, or ‘Boost’. These
are explained in the manufacturer’s instructions. The heating will
not work if the room thermostat has switched the heating off. And,
if you have a hot-water cylinder, the water heating will not work if
the cylinder thermostat detects that the hot water has reached the
correct temperature.

Overview

The Honeywell ST9400C is a 7-day programmer designed to control both central heating and hot water systems, allowing users to set specific ON and OFF periods to match their lifestyle. This device does not directly control temperature but works in conjunction with other temperature controls, such as room and cylinder thermostats, to manage the heating and hot water in a home.

Function Description

The ST9400C offers independent 7-day programming for both heating and hot water, with up to three ON/OFF periods per day. This allows for flexible scheduling, where each day of the week can be set differently, and heating and hot water can be programmed at different times from each other. The device comes with built-in programmes (Profiles A, B, and C) that provide a starting point for typical daily heating and hot water needs, which can then be personalised.

A key feature is the Automatic Summer/Winter Time Change, which automatically adjusts the clock forward and backward during daylight saving transitions, eliminating the need for manual adjustments. The programmer also includes a Built-in Memory that retains the programmed settings indefinitely, even in the event of a mains power failure.

Usage Features

The ST9400C is designed for ease of use, combining a slider and buttons with LoT™ Technology and an OK button for confirming changes. The Extra Large LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) with Backlight enhances user-friendliness and provides clearer viewing, even in low light conditions.

LoT™ Technology provides informative 'on-screen' feedback and operational assistance as needed, guiding the user through programming and daily operations.

Operating Modes: The programmer offers four operating modes for heating (and hot water, if independently controlled):

  • OFF mode: The system remains off.
  • AUTO (Automatic) mode: The system switches ON and OFF according to the programmed schedule.
  • ONCE mode: The system comes ON at the first programmed ON time and goes OFF at the last programmed OFF time, staying on continuously between these two points.
  • CONT (Continuous) mode: The system remains ON continuously.

Slider Positions: The slider has positions for DAY/TIME, COOKER (hot water), HEATING, and RUN.

  • DAY/TIME: Used for setting the date and time.
  • COOKER: Used for programming and reviewing hot water times.
  • HEATING: Used for programming and reviewing heating times.
  • RUN: The normal operating position where the programmed schedule runs.

Override Function: This feature allows temporary changes to the current operating mode without altering the programmed schedule. If the system is OFF and you return home unexpectedly, pressing the OVERRIDE button will switch it ON until the next programmed time. If the system is ON, pressing OVERRIDE will switch it OFF until the next programmed time. The LoT™ Display provides information about the override status.

Extra Hour Function: This allows users to add 1, 2, or 3 extra hours of heating or hot water. If the system is OFF, pressing the EXTRA HOUR button will switch it ON for one hour. If the system is already ON, it extends the current ON period by one hour. Multiple presses can add up to a maximum of 3 extra hours. This function can be cancelled by repeatedly pressing the EXTRA HOUR button until the 'CANCELLED' message appears.

Holiday Function: This feature allows users to switch off heating and hot water for a specified number of days (1-99 days) when away from home, saving energy and costs. The system automatically resumes normal operation on the day of return. To set, press the HOLIDAY button, use the +/- buttons to set the number of days, and confirm with OK. The display will show 'ON HOLIDAY' and count down the days until return. To cancel, press the HOLIDAY button again.

Programming:

  • Setting Date & Time: Move the slider to DAY/TIME. The display will prompt to 'SET DATE + TIME', then 'SET THE DAY', 'SET THE MONTH', and 'SET THE YEAR'. Use the +/- buttons to adjust values and the OK button to confirm each step. Finally, 'SET THE TIME' is adjusted similarly.
  • Modifying Programmes: Move the slider to COOKER or HEATING. The display will show 'SET HOT WATER' or 'SET HEATING'. Use the OK button to cycle through ON/OFF times (ON 1, OFF 1, ON 2, OFF 2, ON 3, OFF 3). Use the +/- buttons to adjust times in 10-minute increments and OK to confirm.
  • Copying Programmes: While viewing a day's programme, press the COPY DAY button. The display will ask 'COPY [DAY] TO [NEXT DAY] OK?'. Use NEXT DAY to select the target day and OK to confirm.
  • Disabling/Enabling Time Periods: To disable an ON/OFF period, set its ON time and paired OFF time to be identical. To re-enable, set them to different times.

Installer Parameters: The ST9400C has an Installer Mode (accessed by holding OK and +/- buttons together in RUN position for 8 seconds) where specific features can be adjusted to suit user preferences or system requirements. These include:

  • 24hr or AM/PM clock display.
  • Backlight operation (off, on if button pressed, on continuously).
  • Enable/disable auto time change.
  • 1-day, 5/2-day, or 7-day operation.
  • Number of ON/OFFs per day (2 or 3).
  • Default programme profile (A, B, or C).
  • Configuration as a Mini-Programmer (if the system has gravity circulation hot water without a control valve, heating being ON means hot water is also ON).
  • Reset all parameters to default.

Mini-Programmer Operating Instructions: If configured as a Mini-Programmer, the device simplifies programming as heating and hot water cannot be controlled independently. In this mode, some operating modes are not possible (e.g., HEATING in AUTO and HOT WATER in OFF). The OVERRIDE and EXTRA HOUR functions for heating will also bring on hot water.

Maintenance Features

The ST9400C is designed for reliability with a built-in battery backup that maintains the real time during mains power failures, ensuring the clock remains correct. All programmed settings are stored in non-volatile (NV) memory, requiring no power to retain information, thus preserving programmes indefinitely.

Troubleshooting Guide: The manual provides a guide for common issues:

  • Blank LCD display: Check for power to the heating system or call an installer if there's a fault in the ST9400C.
  • Heating/Cooker ON but radiators cold/taps cold: Check if temperature controls are off or set too low, or if the boiler/system controls have malfunctioned.
  • 'INTERNAL FAULT' message: Indicates a fault in the ST9400C; call an installer.
  • 'NOT VALID' message when slider moved to HOT WATER: This suggests the ST9400C might be configured as a Mini-Programmer, which restricts independent hot water control. The user should check the configuration data or contact the installer.

The device is designed to be left with the user and forms part of a Home Information Pack, providing essential information for homeowners.
