12 Evaluating MFPs
Total cost of ownership
Outstanding performer delivers excellent return on investment
A successful MFP has to offer more than just superior performance and outstanding print quality. For many
businesses, the total cost of ownership (TCO) is a critical part of the purchase decision. TCO takes into account
everything from the initial investment, to support and maintenance costs, to the costs of supplies.
All-inclusive MFP functionality that increases productivity combined with intelligent device-management tools can
help reduce operator intervention, dramatically lower cost per page, and help you quickly realize a return on
your investment. HP also offers special imaging and printing services designed to control, monitor, and allocate
the costs of printing in your business. For more information, see Appendix A, “Imaging and printing services”
on page 26.
Simplify, save time, and reduce costs
• Consolidate equipment and supplies. By supporting one device rather than five, you can reduce costs by
managing fewer supplies and minimizing storage requirements and service interruptions.
• Give productivity a boost. This device delivers print and copy speeds up to 45 ppm letter (43 ppm A4) and
Instant-on Technology reduces device warm-up time from minutes to seconds, so you get more work done in
less time.
• Get investment protection. You can upgrade with a variety of optional features, including additional
memory, fonts, or storage, and third-party solutions. For more information, see “Versatility” on page 9.
• Reduce maintenance time. HP printing supplies are designed to maintain a low cost of ownership and
minimize user interaction, which saves time and improves productivity.
• Simplify your workflow. Powerful, flexible, and radically simple user interface and management tools save
time and human resources. For more information, see “Ease of use” on page 6.
• Print economically. Printing in EconoMode produces a lighter printed image that is suitable for drafts and
proofs and uses less toner, which may extend the life of your print cartridge and reduce cost per page.

• Count on HP reliability. By far the biggest contributor to user productivity is the reliability of HP equipment,
support, and service. Instead of experiencing frustration and downtime while waiting for repair, users are
getting their work done.
Re-engineer your workflow
The MFP comes standard with send-to-e-mail and send-to-network folder capabilities, including LDAP and
address book support. But with optional HP Digital Sending Software (DSS) 4.3, you can realize your MFP’s full
potential and initiate business processes faster, reduce manual processes and cut the costs of physically
distributing and storing information. HP DSS 4.3 is the entry-level member of a family of server-based software
products that incorporates paper documents into electronic business processes and sends them quickly and
securely to network folders, printers, ftp sites, and fax services.
