3 Storage management overview
This chapter provides an overview of some of the components that make up the storage structure of
the HP ProLiant Storage Server.
Storage management elements
Storage is divided into four major divisions:
• Physical storage elements
• Logical storage elements
• File system elements
• File sharing elements
Each of these elements is composed of the previous level's elements.
Storage management example
Figure 15 depicts many of the storage elements that one would find on a storage device. The following
sections provide an overview of the storage elements.
