Overview

This document describes the Huawei E156G USB Modem, a plug-and-play device designed to provide mobile broadband internet access. It is manufactured by Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd and distributed by Hutchison 3G UK Limited (trading as 3). The modem is designed for ease of use, allowing users to connect to the internet quickly without the need for complex installations or fixed line connections.

Function Description

The Huawei E156G USB Modem serves as a portable internet access device, enabling users to connect to the web via mobile broadband networks. It eliminates the need for physical cables or a fixed line installation, offering flexibility for internet access on the go. The modem is designed to be "plug and play," meaning that the necessary software (drivers) are pre-loaded onto the device itself. When plugged into a computer, it automatically initiates the installation process, making it straightforward for users to get online.

The modem supports various network standards, including GPRS/EDGE, 3G, and HSDPA, providing different levels of speed depending on network availability. A colour-coded light on the modem indicates the current network connection type: green for GPRS/EDGE (fast), blue for 3G (faster), and cyan for HSDPA (fastest).

Beyond basic internet connectivity, the modem's accompanying software, "3Connect," offers additional functionalities. For PC users, this includes data services and applications management, as well as an SMS service. Mac users also benefit from data services and applications management. The software also provides a "My Account" tab (on PC) or menu option (on Mac) where users can view their 3 mobile number. This is particularly useful for Pay As You Go Mobile Broadband customers who need their number to top up their account.

Usage Features

The primary usage feature of the Huawei E156G USB Modem is its simplicity. Users are instructed to simply plug the modem into an available USB port on their laptop or computer. The device can be connected directly or via a supplied cable, which may improve performance in areas with weaker network coverage.

Before connecting, users are advised to ensure their computer meets basic requirements:

  • Operating System: Windows 2000 / XP / Vista for PC, or OS X for Mac.
  • Minimum Operating Requirements: The computer or laptop should meet or exceed the minimum operating requirements for its OS.
  • Display Resolution: At least 800 x 600.
  • Administrator Rights: Users may need login details and passwords for software installation, especially business users requiring 'administrator rights'.
  • Anti-virus/Firewall: It may be necessary to temporarily disable anti-virus protection or firewalls, or 'allow' the installation of the USB modem software.

SIM Card Insertion:

A crucial step before use is inserting the SIM card. This involves:

  1. Removing the cap from the end of the USB modem.
  2. Pulling out the SIM card holder.
  3. Inserting the SIM card into the holder as shown in the manual's illustration.
  4. Placing the SIM card holder (with the fitted SIM) back into the USB modem.

Software Installation:

Once the modem is plugged in, the software installation process begins automatically.

  • For PC users: After a brief waiting period (described as "about the time it takes a kettle to boil"), a User Licence Agreement may pop up. Users should read and accept this, then follow the on-screen Wizard. It's important not to follow any "Windows Driver Installation Wizard" if offered, as this will not fully install the 3Connect software. The installation takes a few seconds to minutes, depending on the computer.
  • For Mac users: After connecting the modem, a "3Connect" icon should appear on the desktop. Clicking this icon opens the "3Connect Installer" software. Users may be asked to read and accept a User Licence Agreement and enter their password or admin login. The 3Connect software will then be automatically installed in the Applications folder.

Connecting to the Internet:

After installation, each time the user wishes to use the modem, they simply connect it to the computer and wait for the 3Connect software screen to appear (which typically takes about 30 seconds). Once the screen appears, clicking "Connect" will initiate the internet connection. The light under the 3 logo on the USB modem will change from green to blue once connected, indicating readiness.

Monitoring Usage:

The 3Connect software integrates with "My3," a free service for checking usage and spending, viewing remaining allowances, buying Top-ups, or converting Mobile Broadband Add-ons. Users can access My3 directly through the "My Account" tab/option in the broadband software by clicking "Open," or by visiting three.co.uk/my3 anytime (even without credit) and logging in with their 3 mobile number (found in the "My Account" section). Registration for My3 is required initially.

Troubleshooting Tips:

The manual provides several troubleshooting tips:

  • If nothing happens after plugging in the dongle, ensure the computer has fully started up before insertion.
  • If the computer cannot detect the dongle, try inserting it into another free USB port.
  • If unable to connect, double-check that the SIM card is correctly inserted into the dongle.

Maintenance Features

The manual provides "Do's and Don'ts" for maintaining the USB modem and ensuring its longevity and safe operation:

Safety Precautions:

  • Do not use the USB modem on planes, at petrol stations, or in hospitals, as it is against regulations.
  • Be aware that laptops and USB modems may interfere with medical devices like hearing aids and pacemakers.
  • If using the modem near oil refineries or chemical factories where explosive gases might be present, always obey warning signs.
  • Keep the USB modem away from children to prevent injury.

General Handling and Care:

  • Only use manufacturer-original accessories to avoid voiding the warranty.
  • Avoid using the USB modem near or inside metal structures or places that emit strong electromagnetic waves.
  • Keep the USB modem dry as it is not waterproof.
  • Store the USB modem in a cool place, away from direct sunlight.
  • Handle the USB modem carefully; do not drop it, bend it, or knock it.
  • Do not take the USB modem apart for any reason, as this will invalidate the warranty.

The device is designed to operate within a wide range of conditions, with an operating temperature between -10°C and 45°C and a humidity level between 5% and 95%. Adhering to these guidelines will help ensure the device remains functional and reliable.
