How Sonar Works

Single Beam Sonar

Describes the 200 kHz single beam sonar system for Matrix 10, 12, or 20.

What's On the Display

Sonar View

Presents a historical log of sonar returns with depth, temperature, and speed readouts.

Zoom View

Increases display resolution to separate sonar returns that are very close together.

200/83 kHz Split Sonar View

Displays sonar returns from 83 kHz wide beam and 200 kHz narrow beam side-by-side.

Big Digits View

Provides digital data in a large, easy-to-see format with depth, temperature, and speed.

Side Beam View

Shows sonar information from left/right 90° 455 kHz beams and 200 kHz down-looking beam.

Bottom Presentation

Key Functions

POWER/LIGHT Key

Turns the unit on/off and adjusts backlight and contrast.

MENU Key

Used to access the menu system, including Start-Up, X-Press, and Main Menus.

4-WAY Cursor Control Key

Used to select menu choices and change menu settings.

EXIT Key

Exits menus, cancels alarms, and cycles through views.

Start-Up Options Menu

Accesses Normal, Simulator, System Status, or PC Connect modes on power up.

X-Press™ Menu

Provides quick access to frequently-used settings without navigating the whole menu.

Main Menu Tabs

Organizes settings under Alarms, Sonar, Setup, and Accessories tabs.

Sonar X-Press™ Menu

Sensitivity

Controls how much detail is shown on the display by adjusting sonar return detail.

Upper Range

Sets the shallowest depth range displayed on Sonar, Split Sonar, and Big Digits Views.

Lower Range

Sets the deepest depth range that will be displayed on the screen.

Chart Speed

Determines the speed at which sonar information moves across the display.

Bottom View

Selects the method used to represent bottom and structure on the display.

Zoom Level

Sets the magnification level for the Sonar Zoom View.

Sonar Menu Tab

Beam Select

Sets which sonar returns from the transducer will be displayed on the screen.

Fish ID+™

Uses advanced signal processing to interpret sonar returns and display fish symbols.

Fish Sensitivity

Adjusts the threshold of the Fish ID+™ detection algorithms.

RTS Window

Sets the RTS™ Window to Wide, Narrow, or Off in the Sonar View.

83kHz Sensitivity

Changes the sensitivity of the 83 kHz beam.

455kHz Balance

Adjusts the sensitivity of the 455 kHz beam.

Depth Lines

Divides the display into four equal sections separated by horizontal depth lines.

Surface Clutter

Adjusts the filter that removes surface clutter noise.

Noise Filter

Limits interference on the display from various sources.

Max Depth

Adjusts the maximum depth of operation for the Fishing System.

Water Type

Configures the unit for operation in fresh or salt water.

Transducer Select

Allows selection of the transducer to be used.

Alarms Menu Tab

Depth Alarm

Sounds when the depth becomes equal to or less than the menu setting.

Fish ID Alarm

Sounds when the system detects fish that correspond to the alarm setting.

Low Battery Alarm

Sounds when the input battery voltage is equal to or less than the menu setting.

Alarm Tone

Selects the pitch of the alarm sound.

Setup Menu Tab

Units - Depth

Selects the units of measure for all depth-related readouts.

Units - Temp

Selects the units of measure for all temperature-related readouts.

Units - Distance

Selects the units of measure for all distance-related readouts.

Units - Speed

Selects the units of measure for speed-related readouts.

User Mode

Sets the menu system to Normal or Advanced.

Language

Selects the display language for menus.

Triplog Reset

Resets the Triplog to zero.

Restore Defaults

Resets ALL menu settings to their factory defaults.

Select Views

Sets available views to either hidden or visible in the view rotation.

Select Readouts

Sets individual digital readouts on the Sonar View.

Depth Offset

Adjusts the digital depth readout to indicate depth from waterline or keel.

Temp Offset

Adjusts the temperature readout by the amount entered.

Speed Calibration

Adjusts the speed readout by the percentage entered.

NMEA Output

Turns the NMEA output on or off.
