Information
about
fabrics,
leather
and
vinyl.
Most
fabrics
are
woven
or
knitted
but
some
may
also
be
non-woven.
It
is
as
easy
to
sew
leather
(1),
leather
imitations
and
vinyl
(2)
as
it
is
to
sew
ordinary
fabrics.
Some
of
these
may
have
a
tendency
to
adhere
to
the
presser
foot.
If
you
are
using
the
buttonhole
presser
foot,
fit
a
glide
plate
under
the
foot
to
remedy
this.
Otherwise,
you
should
use
presser
foot
H,
which
is
teflon-coated,
to
prevent
friction
against
leather
and
vinyl
material.
Woven
fabrics
are
generally
non-elastic,
both
lengthwise
and
crosswise,
but
are
elastic
on
the
bias
(diagonal).
If
you
are
sewing
lengthwise
or
crosswise,
you
can
use
non-stretch
stitches,
e.g.
straight
stitching.
When
sewing
on
the
bias,
e.g.
crotch
seams
or
sleeve
insertion,
sew
as
for
stretch
fabric,
i.e.
with
stretch
stitches.
Some
woven
fabrics
may
stretch
lengthwise
and/or
crosswise
depending
on
whether
they
are
woven
with
elastic
yarn
(stretch).
Some
examples
of
ordinary
non-stretch
fabrics
are:
Light
fabrics:
Silk,
lawn
(cambric)
cutton
and
fine
crepe
(1).
Medium
fabrics:
Cotton
(2)
and
linen.
Heavy
fabrics:
Denim
and
coat
fabrics
(3).
Knitted
fabrics
are
elastic
in
all
directions
and
should
be
sewn
with
stretch
stitches.
Some
fabrics
may
be
crocheted
but
should
be
sewn
in
exactly
the
same
way.
Some
examples
of
ordinary
stretch
fabrics
are:
Light
fabrics:
Silk
and
cotton
jersey
(1).
Other
fabrics:
Velour,
courtelle
jersey,
patterned
and
stockinette
stitched
fabrics
(2).
Do
not
forget
that
you
can
sew
hand-knitted
garments
on
the
machine.
