Internetwork Packet Exchange support is the AS/400 implementation of the NetWare communication
protocols. These protocols include IPX, Sequenced Packet Exchange (SPX), Router Information Protocol
(RIP), Service Advertising Protocol (SAP), and NetWare Link Service Protocol (NLSP). Other related
NetWare functions are also included. This set of communications protocols supports peer-to-peer
connectivity functions in both local area networks and wide area networks.
What is Systems Network Architecture
In IBM networks, Systems Network Architecture (SNA) is the layered logical structure, formats, protocols,
and operational sequences that are used for transmitting information units through networks. SNA also
controls the configuration and operation of networks.
APPC, APPN, and HPR are some examples of the protocols included within SNA. They can be used to
connect the AS/400 with other IBM systems, or non-IBM systems, to connect remote controllers, and to
maintain a high-level of security on your system.
What is TCP/IP
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is a set of network protocols that enables
computers to share resources and exchange information across a network. TCP/IP allows hosts to
communicate with each other regardless of the host or users physical location, the operating system, or
the network medium. TCP/IP operates in many different network environments, that include the Internet
and corporate Intranets.
For more information, see the topic TCP/IP configuration fastpath.
