Circulating Air Blower Maintenance

Overview

This document is an installation and maintenance manual for a Three Phase PA55/PAPA Series Single Package Air Conditioner with Electric Cool and optional Electric Heat. It provides comprehensive instructions for safe installation, operation, and maintenance of the unit.

Function Description:

The device is a single package air conditioner designed for outdoor installation, offering both electric cooling and optional electric heating capabilities. It is a direct drive blower system, meaning the blower motor is directly connected to the fan, eliminating belts and pulleys. The unit is intended for residential and commercial applications, with specific warranty terms outlined for each. It integrates all necessary components for air conditioning and heating into a single outdoor cabinet, simplifying installation compared to split systems. The system includes a circulating air blower, condenser fan, compressor, and evaporator coil, along with electrical controls and safety features.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Series: PA55/PAPA Series, Three Phase.
  • Voltage Compatibility: 208V/230V, 60Hz, 3PH. Instructions are provided for converting 230V units to 208V by adjusting a terminal on the 24V control transformer.
  • Condensate Drain: 3/4" (19.1mm) threaded female PVC connection. Requires a field-supplied condensate trap with a standing water column of at least 2" (50.8mm) to prevent negative pressure issues from the circulating blower and condenser fan. The trap outlet must be at least 1" below the unit drain connection.
  • Ductwork Connections: Supplied duct collars must be reversed for installation. Round shaped flanges accommodate 12" diameter supply duct and 14" diameter return duct.
  • Electrical Access: Dedicated electrical access points for line voltage power supply (one for the unit, one for the heater) and low voltage wiring.
  • Electric Heat Accessory (Optional):
    • Models: AMMH10AHB (9.9 kW at 240V, 7.4 kW at 208V) and AMMH15AHB (14.4 kW at 240V, 10.8 kW at 208V).
    • Heater Amps: AMMH10AHB: 24.1A (240V), 20.9A (208V). AMMH15AHB: 34.7A (240V), 30.1A (208V).
    • Minimum Circuit Ampacity: AMMH10AHB: 30.2A (240V), 26.2A (208V). AMMH15AHB: 43.4A (240V), 37.7A (208V).
    • Maximum Overcurrent Protective Device (Amps): AMMH10AHB: 45A (240V), 30A (208V). AMMH15AHB: 45A (240V), 40A (208V).
    • Temperature Rise: Should not exceed 60°F (33.3°C) on heater.
  • Air Filters: Minimum recommended filter sizes vary by nominal tons of air conditioning and airflow (CFM). Disposable filters are based on 300 ft/min velocity, cleanable filters on 500 ft/min.
    • 3 Ton (1100-1300 CFM): Disposable 576 sq. in. (14x25, 2 Req.), Cleanable 356 sq. in. (16x25).
    • 4 Ton (1500-1700 CFM): Disposable 753 sq. in. (20x25, 2 Req.), Cleanable 466 sq. in. (20x25).
    • 5 Ton (1900-2100 CFM): Disposable 960 sq. in. (20x30, 2 Req.), Cleanable 575 sq. in. (24x25).
  • Blower Motor Speed Taps: Yellow wire for COM, Black wire for HI, MED, LO. Speed tap settings for 10 SEER units: 3 Ton (LOW), 4 Ton (LOW), 5 Ton (HI).
  • Compressors: Single phase units may include a Scroll Anti-Cycle Timer to delay compressor start-up after power interruption.

Usage Features:

  • Outdoor Installation Only: Unit must be placed on a level platform (concrete slab or blocks) of at least 48"x48" (1219mm x 1219mm). The platform should not be in contact with the building structure.
  • Clearances: Minimum clearances from adjacent structures are 30" (762mm) for blower and electrical access panels, 48" (1219mm) between overhang and top of unit, and 10" around the condenser coil area.
  • Ductwork Design: Ductwork, supply registers, and return air grilles must be designed and sized to handle the unit's cooling air volume requirements. Maximum recommended velocity in trunk ducts is 1000 ft/min (5.08m/s), and in branches, 800 ft/min (4.06m/s).
  • Thermostat Control: The unit operates via a low voltage thermostat. Instructions cover setting the thermostat selector switch (COOL/HEAT/OFF), fan switch (AUTO/ON), and adjusting temperature.
  • Sequence of Operation (Cooling Mode): Upon a call for cooling (R,G,Y1 energized), the compressor and condenser fan energize immediately. The evaporator blower motor has a 30-second delay before energizing. When the setpoint is satisfied, the compressor and condenser fan de-energize immediately, and the evaporator blower motor de-energizes after a 30-second delay.
  • Safety Features: Limit controls on the electric heater open the power circuit if airflow is insufficient, resetting when the accessory cools down.

Maintenance Features:

  • Monthly Maintenance:
    • Air Filters: Inspect monthly and replace or clean as required. Washable filters can be cleaned with mild detergent and cold water. Filters must be installed with arrows pointing towards the blower motor.
    • Condenser Coil: Keep the inlet and outlet areas clean of leaves, grass clippings, or debris. Trim shrubs at least 30" (762mm) from unit panels and 10" (254mm) from coil inlet. Clean coils with a non-acid type cleaner.
    • Condensate Drain: Periodically clean the condensate drain and trap. Inspect drainage after at least 15 minutes of continuous cooling operation in humid conditions.
  • Annual Maintenance and Inspection:
    • General: Turn off electric power before removing any access panels. Lubrication and cleaning are required for efficient operation.
    • Condenser Fan Motor: Motors are permanently lubricated for up to 5 years. If oil ports are present, oil with SAE 10W30 motor oil after five years of operation and every five years thereafter. Do NOT use 3-in-1 oil, penetrating oil, WD40, or similar oils.
    • Circulating Air Blower: Turn off electric power, remove blower access panel. Unplug wires from speed tap block (noting locations). Slide housing forward. Inspect blower wheel for dirt/lint accumulation and clean. If accumulation is excessive, disassembly may be required. Oil blower motor if needed (same schedule and oil type as condenser fan motor).
  • Safety Precautions: Always disconnect power at the fuse box or service panel before making electrical connections or performing maintenance. Unit MUST be grounded. Do NOT operate the unit in corrosive atmospheres or without air filters. Do NOT operate on cooling when outdoor temperature is below 60°F (15.6°C) to prevent compressor damage.
