Overview

This document is an installation and maintenance manual for the PAF3 Series Package Air Conditioners.

Function Description:

The PAF3 Series Package Air Conditioners are unitary HVAC systems designed for both cooling and heating applications. These units are self-contained, meaning all major components (compressor, condenser, evaporator, and blower) are housed within a single cabinet. They are suitable for both ground-level and rooftop installations, providing conditioned air to a building's ductwork system. The units are designed to operate efficiently and reliably when installed and maintained according to the instructions provided.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Unit Sizes: The manual covers units ranging from 2 to 5 tons.
  • Dimensions:
    • 2 Ton units: 29-1/2" (A) x 47-1/2" (B) x 47-1/2" (C) with a height of 46-1/2".
    • 2-1/2 to 5 Ton units: 37-1/2" (A) x 47-1/2" (B) x 47-1/2" (C) with a height of 46-1/2".
    • Base Pan/Chassis: 42-3/4" (measured inside to inside on base rails).
    • Overall Height: 27" to the top of the condenser fan, with a total height of 46-1/8" (measured inside to inside on base rails).
  • Condensate Drain: 3/4" (19.1mm) female PVC connection.
  • Electrical: Designed for 208/230V, 1-phase, 60Hz operation. Wiring diagrams are provided for 2 to 3-1/2 Ton and 4 to 5 Ton models.
  • Clearances to Combustible Construction:
    • Duct Side: 2" (6" on large chassis models)
    • Condenser Inlet: 30"
    • Blower Service (Side): 30"
    • Control Service Side (Front Combustion Air Inlet): 30"
    • Clearance between 3 Ft. Overhang and Top of Unit: 30"
    • Combustible Base (Wood or Class A, B or C roof covering material): 0"
  • Ductwork Velocity: Maximum recommended velocity in trunk ducts is 1000 ft/min; in branch ducts is 800 ft/min.
  • Ductwork Insulation: Minimum 2" thick fiberglass "wrap" insulation with a weatherproof vapor barrier for outdoor ductwork.
  • Filter Sizes: Various disposable and washable filter sizes are specified based on the unit model, with minimum area requirements. For example, a PAF324000K00A1 uses a 1 x 20" x 20" disposable filter (384 sq inches) or a 1 x 12" x 20" washable filter (231 sq inches).
  • Blower Performance Data: Detailed tables provide airflow in CFM at varying external static pressures for different speed taps (1-4) and unit models. Airflow data is based on 230V with a dry coil and no filter.
  • Refrigerant: The manual implies a refrigerant-based cooling system, typical for package air conditioners, but does not explicitly state the type of refrigerant.

Usage Features:

  • Installation Flexibility: Can be installed at ground level or on rooftops, with specific requirements for platforms and structural support.
  • Downflow Conversion: Units are adaptable for downflow applications, requiring the removal and reinstallation of blockoff plates and the center rail.
  • Thermostat Compatibility:
    • 2 to 3-1/2 Ton Models: Require a single-stage thermostat with R, W, Y, and G terminals. Some electronic thermostats may also use a C terminal.
    • 4 to 5 Ton Models: Require a two-stage thermostat with R, W/W1, Y1, Y2, and G terminals. Some electronic thermostats may also use a C terminal.
  • Blower Speed Adjustment: The blower motor has four speeds, allowing for adjustment to match heating and cooling requirements. Specific speed tap settings are recommended for "Rated Airflow" and "High Airflow" for each unit model.
  • Continuous Fan Operation: Available, operating at the cooling speed for 2-3.5 ton models and low stage cooling speed for 4-5 ton models.
  • Start-Up Procedures: Detailed steps are provided for initial checks, thermostat settings, and power application to ensure proper operation and identify any issues.
  • Sequence of Operation: Explains how the unit functions during cooling (single-stage for 024-042 models, two-stage for 048-054 models) and heating (single-stage for 024-042 models, staged for 048-054 models), including time delays and component energization/de-energization.

Maintenance Features:

  • Air Filters: Monthly inspection and replacement or cleaning of filters are recommended. Dirty filters are highlighted as a common cause of performance issues and compressor failures.
  • Condenser Coil: Monthly cleaning of the condenser inlet and outlet area, keeping it free from debris and ensuring surrounding vegetation is trimmed back.
  • Condensate Drain: Monthly check for proper drainage and cleaning as required.
  • Annual Inspection: Includes cleaning of the unit, condenser, and evaporator coils. Access panels and the unit top may need to be removed for thorough cleaning.
  • Condenser Fan Motor: Permanently lubricated, requiring no further lubrication.
  • Blower Motor Access and Removal: Instructions are provided for accessing and removing the blower motor and wheel for inspection, cleaning, or replacement. This involves removing the blower access panel, screws securing the housing, and disconnecting wires.
  • Circulating Air Blower: Visual inspection for dirt or lint accumulation on the blower wheel and cleaning as needed.
  • Electrical Connections: Regular checks of all electrical connections and wiring for proper installation and to prevent mechanical damage.
  • Safety Warnings: Emphasizes the importance of turning off electric power before any service or maintenance, and warns against electrical shock and unit damage hazards.
