The Infinity Micro II is a satellite/subwoofer system designed to deliver high-quality audio for both home theater and traditional music listening. This system is versatile in its installation options and provides robust sound performance.
Function Description:
The Infinity Micro II system consists of satellite speakers and a passive subwoofer. The satellites are designed to handle mid-range and high frequencies, while the subwoofer is responsible for reproducing low bass frequencies, creating a full-range audio experience. The system can be integrated with a stereo preamplifier, receiver, or integrated amplifier. It is suitable for various applications, including enhancing TV audio, serving as a center channel, or providing rear channels in a surround sound setup, as well as being an exceptional audio system for listening to CDs, LPs, cassettes, and AM/FM radio.
Important Technical Specifications:
Satellite:
- Power Rating: 10 to 75 watts per channel, RMS
- Frequency Response: 150Hz – 25kHz
- Sensitivity: 90dB @ 2.8 volts, 1 meter
- Input Impedance: 6–8 ohms
Subwoofer:
- Power Rating: 10 to 100 watts per channel, RMS
- Frequency Response: 45Hz – 150Hz
- Sensitivity: 90dB @ 2.8 volts, 1 meter
- Input Impedance: 6–8 ohms
The system is designed to work with amplifiers that provide sufficient power without clipping, as limited power output can cause damage to the tweeters due to spurious high-frequency signals. Choosing an amplifier with higher power is generally recommended.
Usage Features:
Positioning:
- Satellite Positioning: Proper placement is crucial for optimal sound. Satellites should be placed 7–10 feet apart (2–3 meters) for the best stereo effect. Angling them slightly inward can enhance spaciousness and realism. They can be installed on top of or next to a TV monitor, on a wall (flat or in a corner), on the floor tilted upward, or on optional Infinity stands. When wall or corner mounting, ensure left and right speakers are at the same height. If mounted higher than ear level, horizontal installation with tweeters on the outside and tilted downward is recommended for better high-frequency dispersion and imaging. If installed vertically, they can be swiveled inward by loosening and retightening the end plates. The Infinity logo on the front of the satellites should be turned to match the orientation.
- Subwoofer Positioning: The subwoofer's performance is highly dependent on its placement. Moving it even a few inches can significantly alter the sound. For more bass, move it closer to a corner; for less bass, move it away from walls or corners. Low frequencies are non-directional, allowing the subwoofer to be placed anywhere that yields the best bass balance, not necessarily between the satellites. It can be mounted vertically or horizontally, but the port must remain unobstructed and not face the floor.
Mounting:
- To mount satellites on a wall or corner:
- Remove the top and bottom plates by turning them counterclockwise.
- Slide the satellites out of their mounting brackets.
- Connect speaker wires to the black and red terminals on the rear. Ensure the wire is slid through the hole on the mounting bracket before connecting to the speaker.
- Mount the bracket to a wall stud or use heavy-duty moly anchors to prevent tearing.
- Replace satellites into brackets and refasten end plates.
- Adjust the Infinity logo.
- For installation on top of or alongside a TV monitor, brackets can be removed by taking off the top and bottom plates, sliding out the satellites, and replacing the end plates. Store brackets for future use.
- For horizontal floor or TV monitor installation, keep brackets, loosen end plates, swivel the satellite upward or downward, and retighten.
- For speaker stands, remove brackets and use double-sided tape to secure speakers.
Connecting the System:
- General: Ensure all equipment is turned off before making connections. Use heavy-gauge (#16) wire with polarity coding (e.g., a ridge on the plus side).
- Satellites Only (Without Subwoofer): Connect the power amplifier's plus (+) output to the speaker's plus (+) (red) terminal, and the amplifier's minus (-) output to the speaker's minus (-) (black) terminal. Correct phase is crucial; out-of-phase connections (plus-to-minus and minus-to-plus) will cause bass cancellation and distorted sound.
- Subwoofer and Satellites:
- Connect the Left and Right OUTPUTS of your amplifier to the corresponding Left and Right INPUT terminals on the subwoofer.
- Connect the satellites to the Left and Right OUTPUT terminals on the subwoofer.
- Observe polarity for all connections.
- Alternatively, amplifier outputs (Left & Right) can be connected directly to the satellites, then the satellites connected to the subwoofer's Left & Right inputs, observing polarity.
Acoustic Feedback:
To prevent acoustic feedback, which causes distortion, place the turntable on a heavy, solid support as far away from the speakers as possible. Special rubber mounts can also help isolate the turntable.
Maintenance Features:
General Advice:
- Avoid operating the subwoofer and satellites with tone controls set to maximum boost, as excessive bass and treble can damage the speakers. Keep tone controls at reasonable levels.
- The volume control setting on your amplifier/receiver is not an indicator of overall system volume; focus on the loudness level.
- Always turn down the volume when changing inputs (e.g., record to FM) to prevent loud transients (pops and clicks) that can damage speakers.
- Always turn off the system when changing plugs or cables to prevent transients and electrical energy exposure. Keep electrical connections out of reach of children.
Troubleshooting:
- If sound quality is distorted, listen to each speaker separately. If the fault is in both, the problem is likely elsewhere in the system.
- If the fault is in only one channel, reverse the amplifier outputs to the speakers. If distortion moves to the other channel, the speaker is not at fault. If distortion remains in the speaker, contact your dealer.
- Do not ship any parts or speakers for service without prior authorization ("Return Authorization") and a copy of your original bill of sale.
