Overview

The InStep Take 2 Two-Seat Bicycle Trailer is designed for safely transporting one or two children and cargo while attached to a bicycle. It offers a blend of safety, convenience, and durability for families looking to enjoy outdoor activities together.

Function Description:

The InStep Take 2 trailer serves as an attachment to a bicycle, allowing parents or guardians to transport children aged 12 months and older, up to a maximum weight of 40 lbs per child. The trailer is equipped with a 5-point safety harness system to secure children, and a canopy with a weather shield and bug screen for protection against elements. It features a tow bar for bicycle attachment and a safety flag for increased visibility. The trailer can be folded for storage and transport, and its wheels are designed for quick attachment and removal. It also includes a rear storage area and cabin pockets for carrying essential items.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Child Age Recommendation: At least 12 months old.
  • Maximum Weight Capacity per Child: 40 lbs (18.1 kg).
  • Total Weight Capacity (Children and Cargo): 87 lbs (39.5 kg).
  • Maximum Seat Pad (Mattress) Thickness: 2.5 inches (63.5 mm).
  • Maximum Speed: Do not exceed 10 MPH (16 km/h).
  • Rear Axle Extension for Coupler Attachment: At least 2 mm from the hub nut.
  • Cabin Pocket Weight Capacity: 1 lb (0.45 kg) each.
  • Rear Storage Area Weight Capacity: 5 lbs (2.27 kg).
  • Tires: Inflatable; recommended pressure range printed on the tire sidewall.

Usage Features:

  • Assembly and Unfolding: The frame unfolds by lifting sidewalls into a vertical position and securing a crossbar. Pinch points are present, requiring caution during these operations. All locking devices must be engaged before use.
  • Canopy Attachment: The canopy is secured over the frame using snaps and hook-and-loop fasteners. It includes a weather shield that can be rolled up and fastened when not in use, and a bug screen for protection.
  • Tow Bar Extension and Security: The tow bar extends and is secured to the front of the frame with a locking pin and a metal safety loop.
  • Wheel Attachment: Wheels are inserted into rear wheel bracket holes, interlocking gears, and pushed until the axle clicks into place. A firm pull on the wheel confirms engagement of the locking mechanism.
  • Safety Flag Insertion: The flag pole sections are assembled and inserted into a sleeve at the rear corner of the trailer for visibility.
  • Bicycle Attachment (Hub Nut or Quick Release):
    • Hub Nut Attachment: Requires the rear axle thread to extend at least 2 mm from the hub nut. The hub nut and washer are removed, a tab washer is placed on the axle (fitting into the frame dropout slot), the coupler plate is inserted horizontally onto the axle, and the hub nut and washer are re-tightened. The tow bar then slides into the coupler and is secured with a locking pin and safety loop. The safety loop should face away from the wheel to prevent friction.
    • Quick Release Attachment: Involves releasing the quick release lever, skewer, nut, and spring from the opposite side of the wheel. The tab washer is placed on the axle, the coupler plate is inserted, and the quick release lever, spring, and nut are re-inserted and tightened firmly. The tow bar slides into the coupler and is secured with a locking pin and safety loop, ensuring the loop faces away from the wheel.
  • Safety Strap Attachment: A safety strap is wrapped around the bicycle frame and clipped to the tow bar ring, ensuring it is securely attached. This is crucial for preventing serious injury or death in case of coupler failure.
  • Safety Harness Usage (Two Children): Children must wear certified helmets. Each child is seated in the passenger compartment, with the lap buckle placed between their legs. Shoulder straps go over the shoulders, and waist belts under the arms. Straps are adjusted so the lap buckle meets at the child's stomach, and shoulder straps are clipped into the lap belt buckle.
  • Safety Harness Usage (One Child): When using with one child, the child should be seated in the center. The harness can be converted for a single child by snapping the left shoulder strap from the right set of harnesses into the center lap buckle, and the right shoulder strap from the left set into the center buckle. This may twist the shoulder straps, which can be untwisted by manipulating the shoulder strap anchors through the seat back slits. The child is then secured as with two children.
  • Shoulder Strap Adjustment: Shoulder strap height is adjusted using three slots on the back of the seat. The anchor is pulled away from the seat, inserted through a slit towards the front, then re-inserted through a slit at the desired height to the back, ensuring it is properly anchored.
  • Disassembly and Storage: The flag pole is removed and separated. Wheels are removed by pulling the release lever (if applicable) and detaching the wheel. The locking pin is removed from the tow bar bracket, the tow bar is folded underneath the trailer, and the locking pin is re-inserted. The canopy snaps and hook-and-loop fasteners are unfastened, and the canopy is removed. The trailer side walls are carefully folded down. Loose items like the canopy, wheels, and flag are placed inside the passenger compartment. The trailer should be stored in a dry place. If stored in a hot area, some air should be released from the tires to prevent excessive expansion.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: Use mild soap and water only. Avoid cleaning solvents.
  • Routine Checks: Regularly check that all fasteners and equipment (wheels, reflectors, flag, etc.) are tight and properly assembled.
  • Tire Pressure: Check frequently. Inflate tires to the recommended pressure range using only a foot or hand pump. Over-inflation can lead to failure and serious injury.
  • Bicycle Safety Checks: The manufacturer recommends a safety check by a qualified bicycle mechanic before attaching the trailer. Routine bicycle maintenance is recommended annually.
  • Damage Inspection: Check the trailer for damage before each use. Do not use if damaged.
  • Storage: Do not leave the trailer outside after use, as inclement weather and harsh elements can stress the fabric.

Safety Warnings (General):

  • Failure to follow safety instructions may result in serious injury or death.
  • Assembly must be performed by an adult who has read and understood the manual.
  • Do not use if parts are missing or damaged.
  • Dispose of all packaging materials immediately.
