This document is a Quick Start Guide for JCB 8008 CTS and 8010 CTS Compact Excavators, providing essential information for operators. It is not a replacement for the full Operator's Manual, which must be read for complete safety and operational details.
Function Description
The JCB 8008 CTS and 8010 CTS are compact excavators designed for various earthmoving and construction applications. They are self-propelled machines with tracked undercarriages and a 360° revolving upper structure, equipped with a boom, dipper, bucket, and slew mechanism. These machines are intended for digging, elevating, slewing, and discharging materials in normal operating conditions. Typical applications include earthmoving, road construction, building and construction, and landscaping. They can also be used for object handling.

Usage Features
The guide outlines key operational sequences and controls:
Operator Station Layout:
- Controls: Track controls, hand throttle lever, console switches, starter switch, instrument panel, excavator controls, dozer control, extending undercarriage control, and excavator lever lock.
- Switch Panel: Includes work lights (Off/On) and horn (Off/On).
- Instrument Panel: Features an hourmeter, charge (fault) indicator, glow plugs (on) indicator, low fuel indicator, engine oil pressure (low) indicator, and coolant temperature (high) indicator.
Excavator Controls:
- Levers: Control slew (cab left/right), boom (raise/lower), dipper (in/out), and bucket (close/open).
- Swing Pedal: Controls swing left/right and can be folded down into the operating position. The swing and auxiliary pedals must be in their folded positions when not in use.
Dozer Lever:
- Controls the dozer blade (lower/raise).
Extending Undercarriage:
- A control lever allows extending and retracting the undercarriage.
Start-Up Sequence:
- Engage Seat Belt: Fasten the seat belt into the latch.
- Engine Pre-Heat: Move the throttle lever to half speed and turn the starter key to position 2 for 6 seconds to warm the engine.
- Start Machine: From ignition position 2, turn the ignition to position 3 to start the machine.
- Operate Machine: All controls become active, and the machine is ready for use.
Shut-Down Sequence:
- Park Machine Up: Park on firm, level ground, positioning the attachment just above the ground and the dozer on the ground.
- Leave & Secure: Switch off all switches, move the lever to the locked position, and ensure the engine cover is locked. Leave the machine using handrails and footholds.
- Isolate Machine: Turn the isolator key anti-clockwise and remove it.
Mechanical Hitch Unlock System:
- Park Machine Up: Park on firm, level ground, positioning the attachment just above the ground and the dozer on the ground.
- Disconnect Attachment: Stop the engine, remove hydraulic hoses, and remove the locking pin.
- Insert Tommy Bar: Insert the tommy bar into the hole of the latch hook.
- Release Attachment: Apply downward pressure to the tommy bar to release the bucket's rear pivot.
- Restart Machine: Start the engine, rest the attachment on the ground, and engage the hydraulics.
- Remove Attachment: Slowly roll the quickhitch in the direction of the arrow while raising the dipper to release the front pivot.
Maintenance Features
The guide provides a maintenance position and daily/weekly check lists:
Maintenance Position:
- Park the machine on solid, level ground.
- Release the two track levers.
- Set the hand throttle lever to the idle position.
- Lower the dozer blade.
- Lower the excavator so the attachment is flat on the ground.
- Stop the engine.
- Discharge the hydraulic pressure.
- Isolate the controls and remove the ignition key.
- Isolate the battery to prevent accidental operation.
Service & Access Covers:
- The engine cover provides access to key components. Operators must ensure the seat is adjusted to the rear before raising the engine cover to avoid fouling control levers. Always stop the engine and relieve hydraulic pressure before raising the cover.
Engine Compartment:
- Includes hydraulic oil level indicator, oil dipstick, hydraulic filler cap, and hydraulic filter.
Cooling System:
Air Filter & Battery:
- Includes the battery and air filter.

Troubleshooting/FAQs:
- How to release pressure from the Auxiliary system: Refer to OM - page 113 – Release Hyd Pressure.
- Can you dig to dozer: Digging to dozer cannot be done while the machine's dig end is central to the dozer. To dig to dozer, slew the machine over to the side, then use the boom swing to offset the boom, enabling digging up to the dozer.
