Overview

The Jetmaster Double Sided Open Fireplace is a solid fuel heating appliance designed for installation in residential settings. This manual provides comprehensive instructions for its installation, operation, and maintenance, emphasizing safety and compliance with Australian and New Zealand standards (AS/NZS 2918:2018).

Function Description:

The Jetmaster Double Sided Open Fireplace serves as a primary heating source, utilizing solid wood fuel to generate warmth. Its double-sided design allows for heat distribution and visual appeal from two opposing rooms or areas. The fireplace is engineered to provide optimum heat output, convenience, and fuel economy when operated correctly. It incorporates a gather component designed to direct smoke efficiently into the flue system, and an optional double cone cowl can be used for solid fuel applications to prevent downdraft. An optional firescreen is available to prevent sparks from leaving the fireplace, enhancing safety.

    • Thermal resistivity of 75mm PowerPanel: 0.59m².K/W.
    • Minimum thickness can include finishing material, provided total thermal resistivity is not less than 0.65m².K/W.
  • Enclosure Construction:
    • Fronts and sides of enclosure must consist of 75mm Hebel PowerPanel.
    • Hebel PowerPanel sides can be placed against the appliance with 100mm R3.5 insulation compressed to 50mm between the PowerPanel and the appliance.
    • Hebel PowerPanel front walls must be installed a minimum of 25mm from the appliance gather with 100mm R3.5 insulation compressed to 25mm between the appliance and Hebel PowerPanel.
    • Appliance front wall, gather, sides, and all other external parts must be wrapped in 100mm R3.5 insulation between the PowerPanel enclosure up to 200mm above the top of the gather.
    • Front walls of the enclosure must be Hebel PowerPanel to a height of 1280mm above the hearth and extend 75mm either side of the appliance.
    • 75mm Hebel PowerPanel against insulation and firebox air box - compress 100mm R3.5 insulation to 50mm.
    • Timber header on edge above Hebel/Brick box: 50mm clearance to flue required.
    • Non-combustible cladding only to Hebel box.
    • 1050 Unit recessed on both sides by 50mm using 75mm Hebel Powerpanel.
    • Use supplied 70mm surround to cover insulation.
  • Mantle Shelf Clearances: 1000mm above as per clause 3.4.1.3(b) of AS/NZS 2918:2018.
  • Flue Penetration: 50mm gap in all directions around the outer casing of the flue from combustibles, and minimum ventilation of 158,788mm² through the ceiling.
  • Internal Noggins: Not closer than 50mm from the outer flue casing.
  • Flue System Exit Height (Solid fuel AS/NZS 2918:2018):
    • Minimum 600mm above the roof if clear within 3000mm of flue top.
    • Minimum 1000mm above the roof if clear within 3000mm of flue top.
    • If any structure is horizontally within 6000mm of the flue top, the flue must extend 3000mm above the highest point of that structure.

Usage Features:

  • Double-Sided Design: Allows for heating and viewing from two separate areas, enhancing architectural flexibility.
  • Damper Control: A handle on the left side allows adjustment of the damper to control the fire's intensity and slow down burning. It should be in the full open position when lighting a fire and not closed more than 50% during operation.
  • Firescreen (Optional): Designed to prevent sparks from escaping the fireplace, providing an added layer of safety. It attaches by placing hooks between the outer flange and the upper deflector.
  • Logpan: Designed for greater heat and fuel efficiency. Maintaining a bed of ash and coals in the logpan is recommended to create a heat bank, prolonging the life of the logpan and aiding in lighting.
  • Fuel Type: Designed for solid wood fuel only. Burning other fuels may cause over-firing and generate poisonous gases. Only burn wood with under 20% moisture content (ideally 15-20%). Never burn treated or painted wood.
  • Lighting a Fire:
    1. Ensure damper is fully open.
    2. Lay fire lighters 10-15cm apart in the firebox.
    3. Add softwood kindling in a criss-cross pattern above the lighters.
    4. Light the fire and leave unattended for 5-10 minutes maximum.
    5. Load hardwood pieces (no wider than a drink can) in a criss-cross pattern after 30 minutes.
    6. Attach firescreen if desired.
    7. Adjust damper after 45 minutes to slow the fire.
  • Safety Features: Includes warnings against over-firing, improper installation, and use of damaged or unapproved components. Recommends installation of smoke detectors, CO detectors, and a Class A fire extinguisher.

Maintenance Features:

  • Ash Bed Management: The logpan should not be emptied during the cold season. When the ash bed becomes too high, only the top layer should be removed. Excess ashes should be placed in a non-combustible container and moved outdoors.
  • Chimney/Flue Sweeping: The chimney/flue should be swept at least once a season to prevent chimney fires and ensure proper draft.
  • General Cleaning: Visible parts of the Jetmaster can be cleaned with a damp cloth or soft brush.
  • Repainting: The unit can be repainted with heat-resistant paint if desired.
  • Pre-Installation Inspection: Existing chimneys should be inspected and cleaned by a qualified professional for cracks, loose mortar, or blockages.
  • Component Inspection: Before installation, inspect all appliance components for damage. Damaged, incomplete, or substitute components should not be installed.

Important Warnings and Cautions:

  • Installation MUST comply with local, regional, state, and national codes and regulations (AS/NZS 2918:2018). Building consent may be required.
  • Do NOT connect this appliance to a chimney flue servicing another appliance or to any air distribution duct system.
  • Do NOT over fire; if the appliance or chimney connector glows, it indicates over-firing, which will void the warranty.
  • Do NOT store or use gasoline or other flammable vapors and liquids near the appliance.
  • Comply with all minimum clearances to combustibles to prevent fire hazards.
  • Any modification not approved in writing by the testing authority is considered a breach of approval.
  • Mixing appliance or flue system components from different sources or modifying dimensional specifications may result in hazardous conditions.
  • Do NOT operate with cracked or broken components (e.g., glass panels or ceramic tiles).
  • Do NOT use flammable liquids or aerosols to start or rekindle the fire.
  • Open air controls and damper (if fitted) before opening the firing door.
  • For optimum performance, fuel must be loaded "front to rear" with spaces between logs for oxygen flow.
  • Maintain and operate the appliance in accordance with these instructions.
  • The use of some types of preservative-treated wood as fuel can be hazardous.
  • Be aware of negative pressure issues caused by exhaust fans, range hoods, and other factors that can affect appliance operation. Measures to minimize negative air pressure include ensuring adequate outdoor airflow, avoiding installation near doors/walkways, using "sealed can" recessed lighting, and sealing attic hatches and ductwork.
