Questions and Answers

Overview

The JMS Tongue Pressure Measurement Device is a specialized instrument designed to investigate tongue motor function by measuring maximum tongue pressure. It is intended for clinical use by healthcare professionals such as physicians, dentists, nurses, speech-language pathologists, or dental hygienists, under the direction of a physician or dentist. The device operates by detecting the pressure exerted on a probe balloon when compressed by the tongue, displaying the "Tongue Pressure Value" on its LCD screen.

Function Description

The primary function of the device is to measure the maximum tongue pressure. This is achieved through the use of a Tongue Pressure Probe, which contains a balloon that receives pressure when compressed between the tongue and palate. The device then detects this pressure via a pressure sensor and displays the real-time and maximum tongue pressure values. It is crucial to note that while the device provides valuable information for evaluating swallowing function, it is not intended for definitive diagnosis.

The device features an automatic internal pressure adjustment function. Before measurement, the device enters a standby mode, and pressing the "Prep/Reset" button initiates an internal pressure adjustment and zero-point correction. During this process, the "Wait" icon flashes, and the "PTP" (Present Tongue Pressure) value increases until the internal pressure reaches 19.6 kPa, at which point the "Measure" icon lights up, indicating readiness for measurement.

The device also includes an auto-save function. If no operation is performed or no pressure fluctuation of 1.0 kPa or more is detected, the backlight dims after 10 seconds. After 3 minutes of inactivity, the device automatically powers off to conserve battery.

Usage Features

To use the device, the Tongue Pressure Probe and Connecting Tube must be securely connected. The Connecting Tube connects the device to the Tongue Pressure Probe, transmitting the tongue pressure received by the probe to the device. The Tongue Pressure Probe is a single-use accessory, and a new one must be used for each measurement to prevent errors and infection. The Connecting Tube is a replacement part that can be used for one month after opening its individual package.

Patients are instructed to gently hold the hard ring of the Tongue Pressure Probe with their front teeth to properly position the balloon on the tongue. They then push their tongue upwards with maximum force against the hard palate, compressing the balloon for several seconds. The device displays real-time tongue pressure (PTP) and a Level sign indication showing pressure from 0-50 kPa with 10-part icons. The maximum tongue pressure (MTP) is recorded from the display. For repeated measurements on the same patient, the "Prep/Reset" button is pressed again to reset the MTP and PTP displays.

The device can also be connected to a personal computer via a USB cable for data transmission. When connected, tongue pressure values are displayed and stored on the computer.

Maintenance Features

Daily maintenance for the Digital Tongue Pressure Meter involves turning off the power, removing batteries, and wiping dirty areas with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, a cloth soaked in water and neutral detergent, then wrung well, can be used, followed by wiping with a dry cloth. The Connecting Tube should be disconnected from the device and wiped clean. For stubborn dirt on the Connecting Tube, it should be replaced with a new one, even if it has been in use for less than one month.

Regular daily inspections are crucial to maintain device performance and ensure safe use. These inspections include checking for damage, cracks, liquid or dirt on the manometer, foreign matter or damage on the connecting tube port or connector, and ensuring the Connecting Tube is not bent. During use, checks include confirming proper power-on, battery level, standby display, normal internal pressure adjustment operation, and absence of error indications or unusual smells/noises. After use, the device should be checked for liquid, dirt, hot parts, foreign matter, or damage to the connecting tube port/connector or the Connecting Tube itself.

Periodic inspection by a distributor is recommended once a year to check internal pressure adjustment accuracy and measurement accuracy, performing necessary adjustments and repairs. Batteries (AA alkaline or nickel-metal hydride rechargeable) should be replaced approximately every 2,500 measurements. The Tongue Pressure Probe must be replaced after every measurement, and the Connecting Tube should be replaced monthly after unpacking.

The device is designed to comply with EMC standards, but users should be aware of potential malfunctions if exposed to strong electromagnetic disturbances. Proper storage conditions, including temperature and humidity limits, are also specified to ensure the device's longevity and accuracy. When storing the device for extended periods, batteries should be removed to prevent fluid leakage.
