Overview

The Joerns P.R.O. Matt® Plus is a user-serviceable support surface designed for pressure redistribution and patient comfort. It is intended for use in both home healthcare and professional healthcare environments. The system aims to prevent and treat pressure injuries by offering various modes of operation and features that adapt to patient needs.

Function Description

The P.R.O. Matt® Plus system is a dynamic pressure redistribution mattress that can operate in both non-powered and powered modes. In its non-powered mode, the mattress utilizes P.R.O. Technology® to automatically draw air into the cells, providing optimal support without external power. This makes it suitable for situations where power is unavailable or for transport. When connected to the control unit (PMP-CU), it offers powered modes with active pressure redistribution.

The mattress features a four-zone design (head, shoulder, torso, and foot) with 15 internal cells that automatically adjust to the patient's body profile and weight. The head zone is static, made of high-density foam for comfort, while the shoulder, torso, and foot zones are independently optimized for pressure redistribution. The system incorporates viscoelastic one-inch foam topper for enhanced pressure redistribution, patient support, and comfort. An integrated foot zone is designed to protect the delicate heel area.

A key feature is the P.R.O. Technology® for automatic re-inflation of air zones after patient removal, eliminating the need for manual adjustment or inflation. The surrounding firm perimeter provides stability for patient care and transfers, enhancing patient safety. The internal cells are five inches deep and specifically designed for automatic re-inflation without a powered system. The therapy cover is breathable, non-plasticizing, moisture-proof nylon, and aids in preventing friction and shearing. It is also stain and odor resistant, treated with a bacteriostatic agent to inhibit bacterial and fungal growth, and includes a scratch-resistant rubber backing. Internal non-kinking hose sets ensure reliable air flow.

The control unit (PMP-CU) offers three modes of operation: Autofirm, Therapy, and Alternate. The Autofirm mode provides maximum air inflation to assist patients and caregivers during patient care and transport, automatically returning to Therapy mode after approximately fifteen minutes for safety. Therapy mode is a static pressure redistribution mode. Alternate mode cycles air pressure in adjacent cells throughout the mattress (excluding the head section) to continuously redistribute pressure.

Usage Features

The P.R.O. Matt® Plus is designed for intuitive setup and therapy control with crisp, easy-to-read graphics on the control unit. The control unit is compact, lightweight, quiet, and energy-efficient. Quick disconnect hoses facilitate easy setup and allow for rapid CPR release when needed.

In non-powered mode, the mattress is set up by removing it from the bed, placing the P.R.O. Matt® Plus with the logo at the foot of the bed, and allowing five to ten minutes for the P.R.O. Technology® valve to adjust the pressure in the internal cells. The patient is then placed on the mattress. If the mattress is changed from powered to non-powered mode, the hoses must be disconnected from the control unit.

In powered mode, the control unit is connected to the mattress and plugged into an AC outlet. The Power button turns the unit on and off. The Standby light illuminates when the unit is initially plugged in, indicating power availability. If the unit is turned off by pressing the Power button, the Standby light re-illuminates. If the Standby light illuminates without a caregiver pressing the Power button, it indicates that there has been a power interruption and the therapy control unit is ready to be turned back on.

The control unit allows for selection of four alternating pressure cycle times: 5, 10, 15, and 20 minutes. There are five Comfort Adjust settings to increase or decrease the general firmness of the mattress, allowing customization for patient comfort. The Lockout/Silence button locks the control unit settings to prevent accidental changes and silences alarms. The lockout feature automatically engages after five minutes of inactivity. A low pressure indicator illuminates if there is insufficient air pressure in the inner air cells, prompting a check of hose connections and the mattress to ensure no air leakage.

The mattress is suitable for patients at risk of pressure injuries, including those with comorbidities, and can be used for prevention and treatment of various stages of pressure injuries. It provides average pressure readings well below capillary closure levels and allows for adequate perfusion to promote healing. The non-powered mode offers optimal interface pressures through controlled air cell inflation for at-risk patients in the prevention and treatment of Stage 1 and 2 pressure injuries, and for uncomplicated Stage 3 and 4 injuries. In patients with multiple turning surfaces, or Stage 3 and/or Stage 4 treatment, caregivers should be able to reposition the patient off of the pressure wound in at least 2 positions. The powered alternating pressure mode adds the benefit of cyclic offloading for advanced treatment of uncomplicated Stage 3 or 4 pressure injuries, and for patients where such therapy may improve pressure redistribution and circulation.

For patient repositioning, the mattress can be turned and repositioned per an individual turning schedule or per facility policy. The design allows for optimal pressure redistribution and minimizes the risk of shearing injuries.

Maintenance Features

Regular user-service is crucial for the P.R.O. Matt® Plus. Users are advised to read the manual before using to avoid injury. The equipment must be installed and operated in the manner for which it was intended. Facility staff/user is responsible for reading and understanding the product manual.

Cleaning: The control unit should be unplugged from its power source before cleaning. The mattress and control unit should not be exposed to excessive moisture that would allow for liquid pooling. Harsh cleansers, detergents, scouring pads, heavy-duty grease removers, solvents, or acetone should not be used. Instead, a mild detergent and a damp cloth should be used to wipe off dust. Disinfecting involves removing and cleaning the product between patient uses. The unit and mattress should be disinfected with a tuberculocidal disinfectant. Rubber gloves and eye protection should be worn, and the disinfectant should be prepared according to the manufacturer's instructions. After cleaning, the mattress should be wiped down entirely, and all removed items should be disposed of.

Filter Replacement: When using an optional control unit, the air filter on the side of the unit should be checked periodically for buildup of dust/dirt. If buildup is visible, the control unit should be turned off, unplugged, and the filter removed from the filter cover. The filter should be replaced with a new filter, and the filter cover reinstalled.

Storage and Care: The support surface should be thoroughly wiped down outside of the support surface as described in previous sections and allowed to air dry prior to storage. It should be stored with plastic and returned to a storage area. The mattress should not be folded and should be stored flat. The power cord should be wrapped around the unit for convenience. If storing for an extended period, the unit should be wrapped in a plastic bag for dust resistance.

Periodic Inspection: Joerns Healthcare recommends that the P.R.O. Matt® Plus control unit, filter, power cord, and hose set be inspected at least once a year for proper operation. Only authorized personnel trained by Joerns Healthcare should perform preventative maintenance. Preventative maintenance performed by unauthorized personnel could result in personal injury and/or equipment damage.

Troubleshooting: If the P.R.O. Matt® Plus surface is not alternating or increasing in pressure, users should ensure the hose connection from the mattress to the control unit is securely connected, verify that the control unit is in the Alternating mode, ensure the control unit is plugged into an AC outlet, and ensure the Power light is illuminated. If problems persist, Joerns Healthcare should be contacted.

Power Failure: In case of an extended power failure, the P.R.O. Matt® Plus mattress system is designed to continue functioning as a dynamic pressure redistribution mattress replacement system. The patient can be left on the mattress, which will force out air from the internal alternating cells. To maintain pump function during a power outage, an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) may be used. The pump will return to its normal operation when power is resumed.

Mattress Connection: The control unit features a detachable hose set that attaches to the side of the control unit. The connector that attaches to the mattress has three ports. The left and right are of the same connector type and are interchangeable. The center connection is different and must be connected to the center port. To disconnect, the control unit should be turned off, the hose set disconnected by pressing down and pulling the left and right connectors, and the middle connector pulled to fully disconnect the mattress from the control unit.

Transport/Return to Non-Powered Operation: Patients being transported on the P.R.O. Matt® Plus mattress should be transported in the non-powered mode of operation. This involves turning the control unit off, disconnecting the air hoses from the mattress inlet valve, and unplugging the power cord from the line power. Disconnecting the hose set will allow pressurized air to vent from the internal cells. In the non-powered state, the mattress will once again function as a dynamic pressure redistribution system. After transport, if powered therapy is desired, reconnect hoses and system power according to setup instructions.
