WARNING
This product must be installed and serviced by
a qualified installer or service agency. Improper
installation, adjustment, alteration, service, or
maintenance can cause injury or property damage.
How your system works
Cooling cycle
During the cooling cycle, your system removes heat and
humidity from your home and transfers this heat to the
outdoor air.
Heating cycle (heat pumps)
During the heating cycle, your system removes heat and
humidity from the outdoor air and transfers this heat to
your home. This is possible because even 0°F outdoor air
contains a great deal of heat. Remember that your heat
pump does not generate much heat; it merely transfers it
from one place to another.
System operation
Your thermostat gives you full control of the heating and
cooling levels in your home, and can also allow you to
control these remotely using a smart device. Do not switch
your thermostat on and off rapidly or switch between
the heating and cooling mode of operation rapidly. This
could damage your equipment. Always allow at least 5 min
between changes.
Setting the thermostat
CAUTION
The main power to the system must be kept on
at all times to prevent damage to the outdoor unit
compressor. If necessary, use the thermostat control
switch to turn the system off. Should the main power
be disconnected or interrupted for 8 h or longer, do not
attempt to start the system for 8 h after the power has
been restored to the outdoor unit. If heat is needed
during this 8 h period, use emergency heat.
Thermostat
Your key to comfort
Although thermostats may vary widely in appearance,
they are all designed to perform the same basic function:
to control the operation of your air conditioning or
heat pump system. Regardless of size or shape, each
thermostat features the following:
a temperature indicator
a dial, arm, or push button for selection of the required
temperature
a fan switch to choose the indoor fan operation
a comfort switch for selection of the system mode of
operation
Note: Only approved thermostats have been tested
and are fully compatible with this equipment. Many
different thermostats operate on batteries or power
stealing principals. These types of thermostats
cannot be supported as trouble-free when used with
this product.
If your system is designed to allow both cooling and
heating operation, you may have either a manual
changeover type of thermostat or a programmable
electronic type of thermostat.
Manual changeover means that the comfort switch must
be manually positioned every time you want to switch
from the cooling to heating mode of operation or heating
to cooling mode of operation.
A complete operating instruction is provided by the
manufacturer for each thermostat.

Overview

This document is the User's Information Manual for the HMH7 Series - 17 SEER2 Horizontal Discharge Modulating Heat Pump, manufactured by Johnson Controls Ducted Systems. It provides details on the system's function, operation, maintenance, and warranty.

Function Description

The HMH7 Series heat pump is designed to provide both cooling and heating for residential homes. It is a modulating heat pump, meaning it can adjust its output to match the precise heating or cooling needs of the home, leading to improved comfort and energy efficiency.

During the cooling cycle, the system removes heat and humidity from the indoor air and transfers it to the outdoor air. In the heating cycle (for heat pumps), it extracts heat and humidity from the outdoor air, even at low temperatures, and transfers it indoors. The heat pump primarily transfers heat rather than generating it.

The system is controlled by a thermostat, which allows users to set desired temperatures and fan operation modes. Approved thermostats are fully compatible, offering control over heating and cooling levels, and potentially remote control via smart devices.

Important Technical Specifications

The units are tested in accordance with AHRI Standard 210/240 for Unitary Small Heat Pumps and are ISO 9001 Certified for Quality Management System.

Usage Features

  • Thermostat Control: The thermostat is the primary interface for controlling the system. It allows users to select desired temperatures, fan operation (on/auto), and system mode (cooling/heating/off).
  • Manual Changeover Thermostat: Requires manual switching between cooling and heating modes.
  • Programmable Electronic Thermostat: Allows for scheduled temperature adjustments (set-back) to save energy, and automatically manages system operation.
  • Power Failure: The system automatically resumes operation with previous settings once power is restored. However, if power is disconnected for 8 hours or longer, wait 8 hours after restoration before attempting to restart the system, or use emergency heat if needed during this period.
  • Energy Conservation (Cooling):
    • Maintain a comfortable setting (e.g., 78°F/26°C recommended by federal guidelines).
    • Keep windows closed after sundown to prevent moisture ingress.
    • Use kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans judiciously to avoid removing conditioned air.
    • Close drapes/blinds and use awnings to reduce direct sunlight.
    • Avoid turning the system off when away all day; continuous operation is normal to maintain comfort.
    • Do not restrict air circulation with furniture or other obstacles.
    • Avoid placing heat-producing appliances near the thermostat.
  • Energy Conservation (Heating):
    • Maintain a comfortable setting (e.g., 65°F/18°C or lower recommended by federal guidelines).
    • Keep storm windows and doors closed.
    • Close drapes at night.
    • Keep fireplace dampers closed when not in use.
    • Run exhaust fans only when necessary.
    • Keep lamps, televisions, or other heat-producing sources away from the thermostat.
  • Heat Pump Characteristics:
    • Constant Heat: Heat pumps provide heat at a cooler supply air temperature than furnaces, operating for longer periods to maintain a more constant indoor temperature.
    • Water Run-off: During mild weather, water running off the outdoor coil is normal due to condensation and does not indicate a leak.
    • Outdoor Coil Defrosting: The system automatically defrosts the outdoor coil in low temperature/high humidity conditions to maintain efficiency. Steam rising from the unit during defrosting is normal. Auxiliary heat may be energized during defrosting to maintain comfort.

Maintenance Features

  • Regular Periodic Preventative Maintenance: Johnson Controls strongly recommends regular maintenance by a qualified installer or service agency (dealer) to ensure optimal performance, warranty compliance, and adherence to refrigerant discharge guidelines.
  • Filter Care:
    • Inspect air filters at least once a month.
    • Wash reusable filters with mild detergent as per manufacturer's recommendations.
    • Replace disposable filters with new filters.
    • Install clean filters with the airflow arrow in the correct direction.
  • Coil Care (Outdoor Unit):
    • Keep the outdoor unit free of foliage, grass clippings, leaves, paper, and other debris that could restrict airflow.
    • Vacuum debris from between the fins.
    • If the coil is excessively dirty, disconnect main power and wash the coil with a garden hose, avoiding water in the fan motor and control box.
    • Flush dirt from the base pan after cleaning.
  • Troubleshooting (Before Calling Service):
    • Check for a dirty indoor filter.
    • Check for outdoor unit blockage; if found, eliminate it, set the thermostat to Off for 10 seconds, then restart in heating or cooling mode. The system will start after a 5-minute anti-short-cycle delay. If it doesn't start, call service.
  • Warranty Registration: Register the product online at www.upgproductregistration.com to initiate the warranty period and allow for contact if necessary. Registration within 90 days of installation is required for extended warranty benefits.
