Overview

This document describes the Johnson Self-Leveling Rotary Laser Level, Model Nos. 40-6515, 40-6516, and 40-6517. It is a Class IIIa laser tool, manufactured to comply with CFR 21, parts 1040.10 and 1040.11, as well as international safety rule IEC 285.

Function Description:

The Johnson Self-Leveling Rotary Laser Level is designed for various leveling and alignment tasks. Its primary function is to project a horizontal laser plane and a vertical laser plane with a simultaneous 90° split beam. The tool features a self-leveling system with magnetically dampened compensation, which automatically levels the laser. If the laser is out of its self-leveling range, rotation stops, and an alarm sounds to alert the user. The laser rotation speed is adjustable to 200 (L), 400 (M), or 600 (H) RPM, allowing for flexibility depending on the application and desired visibility. An illuminated vertical vial assists with vertical alignment. The device is also water and dust resistant, making it suitable for various job site conditions.

  • Turn-off Timer: 10 minutes
  • Sound Types: Three types of sound signals
  • Size: 6.614" x 2.677" x 0.905" (168mm x 68mm x 23mm)

Detector Specifications (for Model No. 40-6517):

  • Detecting Accuracy: ±1.5mm (<50m); ±2.5mm (>50m)
  • Turn-off Timer: 6 min ±1min
  • Power: 2 "AAA" Batteries
  • Battery Life: 45 hours of continuous use
  • Sound Function: Short sound and solid sound
  • LED Indication: Upper red, middle orange, middle green, down red
  • Size: 4.645" x 2.637" x 0.984" (118mm x 67mm x 25mm)
  • Weight: 0.253 lbs. (115g)

Usage Features:

  • Battery Installation: Alkaline batteries are installed into the battery case, ensuring correct polarity. The on/off switch should be in the off position before changing batteries.
  • Operation Modes:
    • Self-Leveling Mode: For horizontal applications, the compensator/transportation lock knob must be turned to the "On" position.
    • Manual Mode (Vertical): For vertical applications, the lock knob is turned counter-clockwise to the "LOCK" position, disabling self-leveling. The vertical vial can then be manually adjusted using the vertical adjustment knob to center the bubble.
  • Power On/Off: The Power Key turns the laser on or off. A lighted Power LED indicates power-on, an extinguished LED indicates power-off, and a flashing LED indicates weak battery voltage.
  • Rotating Speed Adjustment: The rotating speed switch key allows cycling through 200 (L), 400 (M), and 600 (H) RPM. The corresponding LED lights up to indicate the selected speed. The laser starts in high-speed rotation.
  • Out of Level Alarm: If the laser is tilted beyond its self-leveling range in self-leveling mode, it stops rotating and emits an audible alarm.
  • Detector Usage:
    • Installation: Detectors (included with specific models) require 9V or AAA batteries. They are attached to a clamp holder, which can then be mounted on a grade rod.
    • Detection: The detector's receiving window is aimed at the rotating laser. The clamp bolt is loosened to move the detector up or down until the laser beam is centered, indicated by visual cues (LEDs) and sound signals.
    • Coarse and Fine Detection: The detector offers both coarse and fine detection modes for precise leveling.
    • Sound Function: The sound function can be used when visual display is difficult. A rapid sound indicates the detector is too low, a short sound indicates it's too high, and a continuous sound indicates it's level. No sound means no laser signal is received.
    • Auto Turn-off: The detector automatically turns off if no laser signal is received for 10 minutes (or 6 minutes for Model 40-6517) and no buttons are pressed.
  • Calibration: The manual provides instructions for X&Y-direction accuracy self-check and calibration, as well as vertical bubble calibration. It is the user's responsibility to verify calibration before each use.

Maintenance Features:

  • General Care: The laser unit is a precision tool and should be handled with care. Avoid shock vibrations and extreme temperatures.
  • Storage: Always turn off the unit and lock the compensator before moving or transporting. Store the unit in its case when not in use.
  • Battery Removal: Remove batteries when storing the tool for extended periods (more than 3 months) to prevent damage from battery deterioration.
  • Cleaning: Keep the laser unit and detector dry and clean. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe away moisture or dirt, especially from laser output windows and detector receiving windows. Do not use harsh chemicals, strong detergents, or cleaning solvents.
  • Water Exposure: Although rain resistant, avoid submerging the unit or detector in water or other liquids. If contact occurs, wipe dry immediately.
  • Repairs: Do not attempt to repair or disassemble the laser tool or detector. Unauthorized repairs will void the warranty. Use only original Johnson® parts and accessories.
  • Calibration Verification: The user is responsible for verifying the calibration of the instrument before each use. If calibration fails or accuracy is beyond tolerance, contact Johnson Level & Tool for service.

Safety Instructions:

  • Read all instructions before operating.
  • Do not remove any labels from the tool.
  • Do not stare directly into the laser beam or project it into the eyes of others.
  • Do not set up the laser tool at eye level or near reflective surfaces.
  • Do not place the laser tool where someone could unintentionally look into the beam.
  • Do not operate in explosive environments.
  • Keep the laser tool out of reach of children and untrained persons.
  • Do not attempt to view the laser beam through optical tools.
  • Always turn the laser tool off when not in use or left unattended.
