WELCOME
Thank you for purchasing your Kampa awning. Please read these instructions care-
fully before attempting to set up your awning and retain for future reference. If used
properly, your awning should give you years of trouble free use. We recommend that
your awning is insured against accidental and storm damage as this is not covered by
the warranty.
Awnings contain a high proportion of synthetic materials and under certain conditions
will be affected by condensation inside the awning. This should not be confused with
leaking and condensation can be improved by ensuring adequate ventilation.
The main seams of this awning have been sewn with a special thread to help prevent
leakage. To maximise the effectiveness of this thread it will be necessary to weather
the awning. This involves setting it up and allowing it to become wet and then dry. It
may take several soakings to reach its maximum weatherproofing.
This awning is designed for use in light to moderate weather. During strong winds or
snowfall we recommend that you take your awning down. The awning is designed for
touring use; it is not designed for static or commercial use.
We recommend a trial run before using your awning for the first time. This will allow
you to familiarise yourself with the awning, its set up and any limitations the awning
may have for your particular use. Please also check your caravan awning rail to en-
sure that it is not damaged or has any sharp edges that could damage your awning.

Overview

The Kampa Gala Awning is a portable shelter designed for attachment to a caravan, providing additional living or storage space. It is primarily intended for touring use in light to moderate weather conditions and is not designed for static or commercial use, nor for use during strong winds or snowfall, in which case it should be taken down.

Function Description:

The awning serves as an extension of a caravan, offering a sheltered area for various activities. It features zip-out panels on both sides and the front, which can be opened for ventilation or to create a sun canopy. One side panel also includes a ventilation panel with an outer flap that can be rolled up to increase airflow. The design allows for a veranda-style arrangement, providing a safe space for children or pets while maintaining ventilation. A supplied draught skirt is pulled through the awning rail at the bottom of the caravan to prevent drafts. An internal mud skirt with eyelets helps keep out drafts and can be secured to the ground with pegs, though it should not be used to peg the awning down. Curtains are provided for privacy and should be attached to the curtain track above each window, removed when packing down, and stored separately to prevent colour transfer if damp.

Important Technical Specifications:

The awning frame consists of various poles, including roof rafters, apex to eave poles, and corner frame legs, which are assembled to create the structure. The main seams of the awning are sewn with a special thread designed to prevent leakage, requiring a "weathering" process (setting it up and allowing it to get wet and dry multiple times) to achieve maximum weatherproofing. The fabric is made from synthetic materials. The manual does not specify exact dimensions or weight, but it implies a structure that can be assembled and dismantled for transport.

Usage Features:

  • Assembly: The assembly process involves attaching the awning to the caravan's awning rail, assembling the frame by connecting various poles, and then tensioning the fabric. Key steps include attaching the corner bracket to the awning rail, inserting roof rafters and poles, attaching the main body of the awning to the frame, and securing the awning to the ground with pegs.
  • Pegging: Pegging should start at the rear of the awning closest to the caravan, with rear corners pegged close to and slightly under the caravan for a close fit. Front corners should be pegged in a diagonal direction away from the caravan to ensure good tension. Intermediate pegging points, especially those near doorways, should be cross-pegged. The awning should appear taut without creases once fully pegged. General purpose plastic pegs are included, but different types may be needed for various ground conditions. Pegs should be driven into the ground at a 45-degree angle away from the pegging point.
  • Storm Tie-Downs: For windy weather, optional tie-down kits are recommended. These clip into buckles on the awning and are firmly pegged to the ground. Tie-down kits that go over the awning roof are not recommended as they can damage the frame and canvas.
  • Ventilation: Zip-out panels and a dedicated ventilation panel on one side allow for adjustable airflow.
  • Optional Extras: The manual mentions optional extras such as the "Easy Tread Groundsheet," a breathable groundsheet that allows grass to breathe while providing a comfortable surface, and "Storm Straps," which attach to sewn-in buckles for added stability in windy conditions.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: Dirty awnings can be washed with clean water and a soft brush; detergents and scrubbing should be avoided.
  • Storage: Before packing away, the awning must be fully aired and completely dry to prevent mildew. It should be stored opened out in a well-ventilated, dry place. Curtains should be packed separately.
  • Pole Care: Steel and aluminum poles can be coated with a light layer of petroleum jelly to prevent corrosion, which must be removed before use. Replacement poles can be purchased from dealers.
  • Zip Care: Zips should be operated with two hands, avoiding force or stepping on them.
  • Repairs: A comprehensive spares kit, including silicone waterproof spray, seam sealer, repair tape, and spare guy ropes and pegs, is recommended for extreme weather. Repairs should be carried out by a Kampa-recommended company or supplying dealer; unauthorized repairs may void the warranty.
  • UV Degradation: Prolonged exposure to strong sunlight can weaken awning fabrics. While normal holiday use is fine, extended periods in strong sunlight should be avoided, or the awning should be used on a shaded site. UV degradation is not covered under warranty, nor are awnings used on permanent sites, displays, or for commercial purposes.
  • Condensation: Condensation can occur inside the awning due to its synthetic materials and certain conditions. This is not leakage and can be improved with adequate ventilation. Condensation and its effects are not covered under warranty.
  • Safety: Users are advised not to cook or use naked flames inside the awning and to read and understand the fire precautions label sewn into the awning.
