ASCII
is
an
8
bit
code,
allowing
256
possible
combinations,
and
thus
overcomes
the
shortcomings
of
RTTY
concerning
numbers
and
punctuation.
Because
all
possible
numbers,
letters,
and
punctuation
can
be
defined
within
this
set
of
combinations,
no
LETTERS
or
FIGURES
shift
is
required.
Transmission
of
ASCII
is
accomplished
using
FSK
or
AFSK
as
is
done
in
Baudot
RTTY,
and
many
of
the
operational
practices
have
been
carried
forward
from
RTTY
to
ASCII.
RTTY
and
ASCII
Operation
RTTY
and
ASCII
operation
with
the
KAM
is
accomplished
through
the
HF
radio
port.
Several
commands
and
special
directives
are
used
to
control
the
operation
of
the
KAM
in
RTTY
or
ASCII
operation.
The
following
commands
(from
the
CMD:
prompt)
will
set
the
defaults
for
RTTY
and
ASCII
operation:
ASCBaud
AUtocr
AUTOStrt
Coe
CRAdd
DIDdle

FSKinv
INvert
LCRtty

Entering
the
RTTY

from
the
Command

is
accomplished
by
typing
RTTY
in
response
to
the
cmd:
prompt.
This
will
place
the
KAM
in
RTTY
operation
at
the
baud
rate
specified
by
RBAUD
(default
45)
and
the
display
would
show
the
message:
-RTTY
45-
To
enter
RTTY
at
another
baud
rate,
you
would
use
the
command
RTTY
n
where
nis
the
desired
baud
rate.
To
enter
the
ASCII
Mode,
the
same
procedure
is
followed
as
for
RTTY
operation,
except
that
the
default
baud
rate
is
specified
by
the
ASCBAUD
setting
and
you
type
ASCII
at
the
cmd:
prompt
setting.
The
display
shows:
-ASCII
110-
Once
you
have
entered
the
RTTY
or
ASCII
Mode
of
operation,
several
directives
are
activated,
allowing

These
directives
and
their

are:
