The KX-7050S model features Dolby HX Pro headroom extension function and ATCS function, which provide superior high-frequency characteristics during recording. The Dolby S type NR is a noise reduction system for high-quality sound reproduction.

Usage Features

  • Power Supply: The units are designed for operation on 120 volts AC only in the U.S.A. and Canada, 240 volts AC in Australia, and 230 volts AC in Europe. For other countries, an AC voltage selector switch on the rear panel allows adjustment between 110-120 volts or 220-240 volts AC.
  • Dolby Noise Reduction: Both models incorporate Dolby B and C noise reduction systems to minimize tape hiss. The KX-7050S also includes Dolby S NR for enhanced noise reduction.
  • DPSS (Direct Program Search System): This feature enables convenient operations according to the instructions of the operation panel. It allows for quick location and playback of specific tunes on a tape, supporting searches for 4 seconds or more between tunes, single-tune repeated playback, rewind & play, and dash & play functions.
  • ATCS (Automatic Tape Calibration System): This function optimizes the bias and recording sensitivity values automatically to make the recording characteristics of the tape to be used for recording. The optimum values for recording, set by the ATCS, can be stored for each type of tape (Normal, CrO2, and Metal).
  • Optimum Value Preset Operation: Allows users to store and recall preset recording values for different tape types.
  • Recording Features:
    • How to Record: Detailed instructions are provided for inserting a tape, selecting the Dolby NR mode, adjusting the recording tuner sound, selecting the source, activating ATCS, setting the recording level, and starting recording.
    • Temporary Pause: Recording can be temporarily paused and resumed.
    • Re-start Recording after Mistake: Instructions for stopping and restarting recording if a mistake occurs.
    • Non-recorded Blanks: Procedures for creating and managing non-recorded blanks between programs.
    • Synchro Recording: The unit can be connected to a Kenwood amplifier (receiver) with a SYSTEM CONTROL jack and a Kenwood turntable with a SYSTEM CONTROL jack for synchronized recording of analog discs. Similarly, it can be connected to a Kenwood CD player for synchronized recording of CDs.
    • CD Peak-Search Recording: This function helps in setting the optimal recording level when recording from a CD by automatically searching for the peak level.
    • Edited Recording of CD: Allows for editing and recording specific tracks or segments from a CD onto a tape.
  • Playback Features:
    • Starting Playback: Simple steps for inserting a cassette tape, determining playback conditions (Dolby NR mode), and starting playback.
    • Fast Forward and Rewind: Standard tape transport controls.
    • A/B Repeat: Plays the block between two designated points repeatedly.
    • Index Scan: Plays the first about 10 seconds of every tune on the tape.
    • Listening through Headphones: The unit includes a headphone jack with a level control.
  • Timer Operations: The unit incorporates a built-in timer standby function, allowing for unattended playback and recording. This requires an audio timer (optionally available) to be connected.
    • Timer Playback: Set the power switches to ON, insert a cassette, select Dolby NR, adjust amplifier volume, rewind tape, set timer for desired time, and set the TIMER switch to PLAY.
    • Timer Recording of Tuner Broadcast: Set power switches to ON, receive desired radio station, insert a cassette, select Dolby NR, set MPX filter, activate ATCS, adjust recording level, set timer for recording start time, and set the TIMER switch to REC.
  • Remote Control (Optional): The unit can be controlled by an optional remote control unit (Model: RC-X090 Infrared system). The remote control provides functions for preset, counter reset, ATCS, index scan, pause, record, rewind, fast forward, Dolby NR, auto monitor, repeat A/B, stop, open/close, power, and play.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning the Head Section: Regular cleaning of the heads and peripheral components (capstan, pinch roller) is crucial for optimal performance. A cotton swab dipped in alcohol is recommended for cleaning.
  • Demagnetizing the Head: Periodically demagnetizing the head is necessary to maintain sound quality and prevent noise. A commercially available demagnetizer should be used.
  • Care of Cassette Tapes:
    • Store tapes in a place not subject to direct sunlight or high temperatures.
    • Avoid strong magnetic fields.
    • Remove slack in the tape before insertion.
    • Use endless tapes sparingly, as they can damage the mechanism.
  • Prevention of Condensation: If the unit is moved from a cold to a warm place, or if there is a large temperature difference, condensation may occur. In such cases, the unit should be left to dry for several hours with the power ON.
  • Important Safeguards: The manual emphasizes several safety precautions, including:
    • Power Sources: Use only the specified power source.
    • Power-cord Protection: Route power supply cords carefully to prevent damage.
    • Polarization: Ensure proper plug insertion to prevent electric shock.
    • Ventilation: Maintain adequate ventilation around the unit to prevent overheating.
    • Water and Moisture: Avoid exposing the unit to water or moisture.
    • Temperature: Operate within the recommended temperature range (+5°C to +41°C).
    • Heat: Keep the unit away from heat sources.
    • Electric Shock: Do not open the enclosure; refer servicing to qualified personnel.
    • Enclosure Removal: Do not remove the enclosure to prevent electric shock.
    • Magnetic Fields: Keep the unit away from strong magnetic fields.
    • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning.
    • Accessories: Do not place the unit on an unstable cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table.
    • Lightning: Unplug the unit during lightning storms or when left unattended for long periods.
    • Abnormal Smell: If an abnormal smell or smoke is detected, immediately turn off the power and unplug the unit.
    • Damage Requiring Service: Refer to qualified service personnel if the unit is damaged, exposed to rain or water, does not operate normally, or exhibits a marked change in performance.
    • Servicing: Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel.
    • Outdoor Antenna Grounding: Follow national electrical code guidelines for grounding outdoor antennas.
    • Power Lines: Avoid locating an outside antenna system near power lines.
    • AC Outlets: Do not connect other audio equipment with a power consumption larger than that specified to the AC outlet on the rear panel.
    • Overloading: Do not overload wall outlets, extension cords, or integral convenience receptacles.
    • Attachment: Do not use attachments not recommended by the manufacturer.
    • Replacement Parts: Use replacement parts specified by the manufacturer.
    • Safety Check: Upon completion of any service or repairs, the service technician should perform safety checks.
