• Locatethefirstalarmintheimmediateareaofthebedrooms.
Trytomonitortheexitpath,asthebedroomsareusually
farthestfromtheexit.Ifmorethanonesleepingareaexists,
locateadditionalalarmsineachsleepingarea(Image1A).
• Locateadditionalalarmstomonitoranystairwayasstairwaysact
likechimneysforsmokeandheat.
• Locateatleastonealarmoneveryfloorlevel(Image1B).
• LocateanalarmineverySleepingRoom.
• Locateanalarmineveryroomwhereelectricalappliancesare
operated(i.e.portableheatersorhumidifiers).
• Locateanalarmineveryroomwheresomeonesleepswiththe
doorclosed.Thecloseddoormaypreventanalarmnotlocated
inthatroomfromwakingthesleeper.
• Smoke,heat,andcombustionproductsrisetotheceilingand
spreadhorizontally.Mountingthesmokealarmontheceilingin
thecenteroftheroomplacesitclosesttoallpointsintheroom.
Ceilingmountingispreferredinordinaryresidentialconstruction.
• Whenmountinganalarmontheceiling,locateitataminimum
of10cm(4”)fromthesidewall(Image2A).
• Whenmountingthealarmonthewall,useaninsidewallwith
thetopedgeofthealarmataminimumof10cm(4”)anda
maximumof30.5cm(12”)belowtheceiling(Image2A).
• Putsmokealarmsatbothendsofabedroomhallwayorlarge
roomifthehallwayorroomismorethan9.1m(30’)long.
• Formobilehomeinstallation,selectlocationscarefullytoavoid

• Installsmokealarmsonsloped,peakedorcathedralceilings
