Bleeding the System
Before connecting the pump unit to the distribution box of the VDO LOGIC PILOT, it is
necessary to remove air still left in the system.
Run the pump unit by supplying voltage to move the rudder in either direction . This can be
archieved by changing the polarity. The ram cylinder must move instantly the pump is run.
After a while the action will become positive. Leave the helm unit with the oil level about 10
mm from the top.
After the system is filled, apply pressure to each side of the system by pulling the wheel hard
against each rudder stop. Check every joint and length of tube for leaks. Fasten all tubing
down to prevent fracture due to vibration.
Wiring Connection
The wires from the electrical motor must be connected according to the installation and ope-
rating instructions of the VDO LOGIC PILOT.
The wires must be connected to the distribution box terminals marked “MOTOR OUTPUT 1”
and “MOTOR OURTPUT 2”. The correct polarity can not be determined until the autopilot is
tested. For now, connect one wire to each. If more wire is required, use 4 mm
2
.
The heavy duty supply should be fused according to the autopilot manual and drive unit fit-
ted with a fuse according to the specification.
Completing the Installation
Once the installation is complete with the drive unit in place, the tests described in the auto-
pilot manual (see “Testing the VDO LOGIC PILOT System”) have to be carried out.
Ensure the steering moves freely from lock to lock without undue stiffness and that it can
move to its full travel without fouling.
After the autopilot system has been used for 8 - 10 hours it is recommended that the moun-
ting and fastenings of the drive unit are checked and re- tightened, if necessary.
