Solutions include cleaning or replacing the air cleaner element, allowing the engine to cool, reducing the engine load, clearing the restricted exhaust, inspecting and replacing faulty spark plugs, checking and reducing high crankcase oil level, adjusting the governor setting, charging or replacing the battery, inspecting for causes of low compression, checking and refilling crankcase oil to proper level, and using clean and fresh fuel.

  If your Kohler engine starts but doesn't keep running, the issue might stem from a faulty carburetor, a faulty cylinder head gasket, or faulty or misadjusted choke or throttle controls. Other possible causes include a fuel pump malfunction (vacuum hose clogged or leaking), an intake system leak, loose wires or connections that intermittently ground the ignition kill circuit, poor fuel quality, or a restricted fuel tank cap vent. Inspect and repair or replace the faulty carburetor. Inspect and replace the faulty cylinder head gasket. Adjust or replace faulty choke or throttle controls. Check and repair fuel pump and hoses. Inspect and repair intake system leaks. Check and secure loose wires or connections. Use clean and fresh fuel. Clear the restricted vent.

Charge or replace the battery. Inspect and replace the faulty starter or solenoid. Inspect and replace the faulty key or ignition switch. Inspect and repair the interlock switch. Check and secure loose wires or connections. Inspect and repair pawls. Inspect internal engine components for seizure.

  If your Kohler engine uses an excessive amount of oil, it could be due to loose or improperly torqued fasteners, a blown head gasket or overheating, a broken breather reed, a clogged, broken, or inoperative crankcase breather, an overfilled crankcase, incorrect oil viscosity/type, a worn cylinder bore, worn or broken piston rings, or worn valve stems/valve guides. Check and properly torque fasteners. Inspect and replace blown head gasket. Replace the broken breather reed. Inspect and repair crankcase breather. Drain excess oil from crankcase. Use the correct oil viscosity/type. Inspect and repair or replace worn cylinder bore. Inspect and replace worn or broken piston rings. Inspect and replace worn valve stems/ valve guides.
