The importance of checking and changing oi l at t he prescribed in terval s cannot overemphasized
particular ly under the o perat ing con ditions usua lly encountered with most air-cooled engine applications.
To ob tain maximum service life , per form these services on time.
Oil Change : The oil must be changed every 25 operating hour s under normal c onditions or more fre-
quen tly under dlrty, dusty condi tions . On a new engine, change o il after t he first 5 hours and then
at 25 hour intervals . Drain oi l while hot for it flows more freely thus carrying away more impurities.
After completing dra ining old oil, reinstall drain plug then remove oil filler cap and add 2 quart
(1.9 litres) of oi l to begin with--check the oil level on the dipstick before adding more--bring the
level up
in the safe range but do not exceed the f ull mark. Select oil weight and type according to out-
side temperature.
Oil TYEe: Use high quality detergent type oil with API Service Class SC, CC, SD or SE . Oil weight
(SAE-V1SCOSlty) is selected according to the anticipated am bi ent temperatures as shown below:
Above 30°F (1°C ): Use SAE-30 whenever avai lable or SAE 10W-30 or SAE 10W-40 as alternates.
30° to OaF (1° to -17°C) : Use SAE -lO whenever avai lable or SAE 5W-30 or SAE 10W-40 as alternates.
Below OaF (-17°C): Use SAE 5W-20 or SAE 5W-30 .
air cleaner service
The engine is equipped with a dry type air cleaner. Make sure the air cleaner cover includes an air
c leaner seal . Without this seal the carburetor may be exposed to dirt and the air cleaner cover may vi-
brate when engine is running. Every 50 hours remove element and service by tapping element lightly
against flat surface t o dislodge loose surface dirt--do not clean in any liquid or blow out with com-
pressed air as this will ruin filter material in the element. Replace (with genuine Kohler replacement
element only)
after each 100 hours. Service element more frequently under dusty, dirty conditions.
