11.32 Changing the glass fiber yarn filling of the main silencer
Warning
Danger of burns The exhaust system gets very hot when the vehicle is driven.
– Allow the exhaust system to cool down before performing any work on the vehicle.
Info
Over time, the fibers of the glass fiber yarn escape and the damper “burns” out.
Not only is the noise level higher, the performance characteristic changes.
Preparatory work
– Remove the main silencer. ( p. 73)

Main work
(All SX‑F standard models, XC‑F US)
– Remove all the screws on the main silencer.

Take off silencer cap

and O-ring

–
Take off outer tube

and O-ring

.
–
Pull glass fiber yarn filling

off of inner tube

.
– Clean the parts that need to be reinstalled and check for
damage.
–
Mount new glass fiber yarn filling

on inner tube

.
–
Slide O-ring
4
and outer tube
3
over glass fiber yarn
filling
5
.
–
Insert O-ring
2
and silencer cap
1
into outer tube
3
.
– Mount and tighten all of the screws.

M5 7 Nm (5.2 lbf ft)

– Drill out all rivets on the main silencer and remove steel
strips

. Carefully knock the rivets inward.

Take off silencer cap

and outer tube

–
Pull glass fiber yarn filling

off of inner tube

.
– Clean the parts that need to be reinstalled and check for
damage.
– Wind the adhesive tape around the end of the inner tube.
–
Mount new glass fiber yarn filling

on the inner tube.
– Remove the adhesive tape from the inner tube.
–
Slide outer tube

over the glass fiber yarn filling.
–
Insert silencer cap

into the outer tube.
–
Position steel strips
1
and mount the rivets.
