The LNL-1300 Board
The LNL-1300 reader interface provides a solution to the host system
integrator for interfacing to a TTL (D1/D0, Clock/Data), F/2F or RS-485
device, and door hardware. It also provides a tri-stated LED control and
buzzer control. Two (2) Form-C contact relay outputs may be used for strike
control or alarm signaling. Two (2) inputs are provided that can be used for
monitoring the door contact and request to exit push button. Input circuits
can be configured as unsupervised or supervised. Communication to the
controller is accomplished via a 2-wire RS-485 interface. The LNL-1300
requires 12 to 24 VDC for power.
LNL-1300 Hardware
The LNL-1300 requires filtered 12 to 24 VDC ± 10% for power. Two (2)
inputs are typically used for door contact and exit push button monitoring.
End of line resistors are required input supervision, shown below.
Note: The input power is passed through to the reader terminal strip
and is available for powering a reader. Readers that require
different voltage requirements must be powered separately. Care
must be taken to insure the input voltage is within the voltage
range of the reader. The reader power output terminal, TB4-6
(VO), is not current-limited.

Overview

The LNL-1300 Series 3 Single Reader Interface Module is designed to bridge various reader technologies and door hardware with a host control system, providing a comprehensive solution for access control applications. It supports multiple reader types, including TTL (D1/D0, Clock/Data), F/2F, and 2-wire RS-485 devices, making it versatile for different security setups.

Function Description:

The LNL-1300 acts as an intermediary between readers and door hardware and a Lenel intelligent controller (e.g., LNL-3300) via a 2-wire RS-485 interface. It translates reader data and manages door hardware, including strike control and alarm signaling. The module features two Form-C contact relay outputs for strike control or alarm signaling, and two inputs for monitoring door contacts and request-to-exit (REX) push buttons. These inputs can be configured as either unsupervised or supervised, with end-of-line (EOL) resistors required for supervised configurations.

The device also provides tri-stated LED control and buzzer control for reader feedback. Communication to the controller is half-duplex, multi-drop, and supports a total cable length of up to 4000 feet (1219 m) using shielded 24 AWG cable with a characteristic impedance of 120 ohms. The last device on the communication line requires a terminator jumper (J1) to be installed.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power: Requires filtered 12 to 24 VDC ± 10% for operation. The module itself draws a maximum of 150 mA (plus reader current).
  • Reader Power Output: 12 to 24 VDC (input voltage passed through). This output is not current-limited, so care must be taken to ensure the input voltage is within the reader's voltage range.
  • Reader LED Output: TTL compatible, high > 3 V, low < 0.5 V, 5 mA source/sink maximum.
  • Buzzer Output: Open collector, 12 VDC open circuit maximum, 40 mA sink maximum.
  • Data Inputs: TTL compatible, F/2F, or 2-wire RS-485.
  • Communication: 2-wire RS-485, supporting baud rates of 9600, 19200, 38400, or 115200 bps.
  • Relay Outputs:
    • K1 (Strike Relay): Normally Open (NO) contact: 5 A @ 30 VDC resistive; Normally Closed (NC) contact: 3 A @ 30 VDC resistive.
    • K2 (Auxiliary Relay): 1 A @ 30 VDC resistive.
    • Outputs are Power limited/class 2 when powered by an external power limited/class 2 power supply.
  • Inputs:
    • Two (2) unsupervised/supervised inputs, standard EOL, 1k/1k ohm, 1%, ¼ watt.
    • One (1) unsupervised input dedicated for cabinet tamper.
  • Cable Requirements:
    • Power: 1 twisted pair, 18 AWG.
    • RS-485 I/O devices: 1 twisted pair with drain wire and shield, 24 AWG, 120 ohm impedance, 4000 feet (1219 m) maximum.
    • Alarm inputs: 1 twisted pair per input, 30 ohms maximum.

    • Humidity: 5% to 95% RHNC.
  • UL 294 Performance Levels: Standby Power (I), Endurance (IV), Line Security (I), Destructive Attack (I).

Usage Features:

  • Reader Configuration: The reader port can be configured via host software to support various reader types. In 2-wire LED mode, the buzzer output drives the second LED.
  • Input Supervision: Inputs for door contact and REX can be supervised using EOL resistors, enhancing security by detecting tampering or wiring faults.
  • Relay Protection: For door strike relays, a contact protection circuit (e.g., diode for DC strikes) is recommended to minimize premature contact failure and reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI). This circuit should be located as close to the load as possible (within 12 inches/30 cm).
  • Device Addressing: A 5-position DIP switch (switches 1-5) allows setting the device communication address from 0 to 31.
  • Baud Rate Selection: DIP switches 6 and 7 configure the communication baud rate (38,400 bps, 19,200 bps, 9600 bps, or 115,200 bps).
  • Encryption: DIP switch 8 enables or disables downstream encryption. When encryption is required, the switch is ON; otherwise, it's OFF for normal operation. This feature is available with OnGuard® 2009 or later.
  • Status LEDs:
    • D1 LED (Heartbeat and On-Line Status): Indicates off-line (1-second rate, 20% ON, 80% OFF), on-line non-encrypted (1-second rate, 80% ON, 20% OFF), or on-line encrypted communication (0.1 sec ON, 0.1 sec OFF, repeated). Also indicates error (0.1 sec ON, 0.1 sec OFF) when waiting for application firmware download.
    • D2 LED (Serial I/O Communication Port Status): Indicates communication activity on the serial I/O communication port.
    • All LEDs are OFF during power-up and turn ON at the beginning of initialization.

Maintenance Features:

  • Troubleshooting with LEDs: The status LEDs provide visual cues for power-up, initialization, communication status (encrypted/non-encrypted), and error conditions, aiding in quick diagnosis.
  • Modular Design: The interface module is a compact unit, simplifying installation and replacement.
  • Regulatory Compliance: The device complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules, ensuring it does not cause harmful interference and accepts received interference.
  • Safety Guidelines: The LNL-1300 is intended for use in low voltage, class 2 circuits only. It is not rated for life-critical control applications and should only be used to control exits where an alternative method for exit is available.

The LNL-1300 is designed for installation by experienced security professionals. It is crucial to follow the provided wiring diagrams and specifications to ensure proper operation and system reliability.
