Overview

The iHarmony® Zoning System - Damper Control Module (10C16) is a key component in Lennox communicating HVAC systems, designed to manage airflow and temperature in up to four distinct zones within a home or building. This module works in conjunction with the iComfort S30 Ultra Smart Thermostat and other Lennox communicating indoor and outdoor units to provide precise, energy-efficient climate control.

Function Description:

The Damper Control Module (DCM) serves as the central hub for zone management. It receives commands from the iComfort S30 thermostat and translates them into actions for the zone dampers, which regulate airflow to individual zones. The module also integrates various sensors, including the Discharge Air Temperature Sensor (DATS) and an optional Outdoor Air Temperature Sensor (OATS), to monitor system performance and ensure optimal comfort and efficiency.

In a communicating variable speed or variable capacity (modulating) indoor and two-stage or variable capacity (modulating) outdoor unit setup, the DCM supports up to four zones. For communicating variable speed indoor units with communicating or non-communicating (conventional) single-stage outdoor units, it supports a maximum of two zones. When paired with a communicating variable speed indoor unit and communicating or non-communicating (conventional) two-stage outdoor unit, it supports up to four zones.

The DCM's primary functions include:

  • Damper Control: Opening and closing zone dampers to direct conditioned air to specific zones based on demand. It supports spring-open/power-close dampers, as well as power-open/spring-close and power-open/power-close configurations. Modulating dampers are not supported.
  • Temperature Monitoring: Utilizing the DATS (88K38) to monitor supply air temperature, which is crucial for precise dehumidification operation, especially with variable capacity outdoor units.
  • Pressure Monitoring: Integrating with a field-provided HFC-410A high pressure switch (27W13) for heat pump applications to protect the system from high pressure conditions during heating mode.
  • System Integration: Communicating with the indoor unit, outdoor unit, and zone sensors via the RS-BUS to coordinate heating, cooling, and fan operations across all zones.
  • Airflow Management: Allowing for the configuration and adjustment of CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) settings for each zone, both for continuous blower operation and for heating/cooling demands. This ensures adequate airflow and prevents issues like short cycling or excessive static pressure.
  • Safety Features: Incorporating freezestat (optional) functionality to prevent the indoor coil from freezing in small zones with low airflow. The module also monitors for high pressure conditions in heat pump systems.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Consumption: Nominal 24VAC, 2AMP with 4 dampers closed. Total 6VA for the damper control module and three in-zone thermostats.
  • Input Voltage: 18-30 VAC (Nominal 24VAC).
  • Input Current: 2 Amp (at 24VAC with all four dampers closed).
  • Wiring:
    • Power terminals (R and C): 18AWG unshielded thermostat cable (field-provided).
    • Communications terminals (I+ and I-): 18-22AWG shielded thermostat cable (recommended) for noise interference reduction.
    • DATS: 18AWG unshielded thermostat cable, maximum 30 feet (9 meters).
    • Freezestat/Pressure Switch: 18AWG unshielded thermostat cable, maximum 197 feet (50 meters).
    • Zone Sensors (17A20): 18-22AWG shielded thermostat cable, maximum 197 feet (50 meters).
  • DATS (88K38) Installation: Located at least 19 inches above the air handler unit and 10 inches above the cooling coil with a furnace. Tip of the sensor should be 1/2 the depth of the plenum and centered over the discharge airflow.
  • OATS (X2658) Wiring Distance: Not to exceed 150 feet (45 meters) to the iComfort S30.
  • High Pressure Switch (27W13): Opens at 550 psig and closes at 425 psig.
  • Freezestat (Optional): Available models 93G35 (opens at 29°F, closes at 58°F) and 50A93 (opens at 36°F, closes at 58°F).

Usage Features:

  • Zone Configuration: The iComfort S30 thermostat automatically populates commissioning screens for zone setup once the DCM is installed and energized. Users can rename zones and adjust CFM settings for continuous blower, heating, and cooling operations.
  • Scheduling: Individual schedules can be set for each zone through the iComfort S30 thermostat, allowing for personalized comfort and energy savings. Predefined schedules (IQ, summer, winter, spring/fall, save energy) are available, with options for customization.
  • Airflow Mapping: The system allows for precise airflow mapping per zone based on target air temperatures, ensuring optimal BTU/CFM saturation and preventing issues like insufficient or excessive airflow.
  • Heating/Cooling Changeover: The system intelligently manages changeovers between heating and cooling demands from different zones, prioritizing demands and ensuring system stability with built-in delays.
  • Dual-Fuel Operation: For systems with both a gas furnace and a heat pump, the thermostat uses balance points to determine the most efficient heating source.
  • Humidity Control: While in zoning mode, the system does not actively humidify or dehumidify. This feature is available when the iComfort S30 or iComfort Wi-Fi are switched to whole-home mode (non-zoning).
  • Troubleshooting and Alert Codes: The system provides alert codes (e.g., Unknown Device Detected, Communication Problem, Low Secondary Voltage, Primary Limit Switch Open) to diagnose and resolve operational issues. Critical alerts are displayed on the home screen, while moderate alerts are found in the Installer alert button.

Maintenance Features:

  • Re-Configure System: If the DCM or other components are displaying a "soft disable" state (indicating an unknown or non-communicating device), the system can be re-configured through the thermostat's advanced settings to re-detect and properly integrate devices.
  • Resetting Thermostat/HVAC Equipment: The thermostat or HVAC equipment can be reset through the dealer control center. However, this will remove all parameter adjustments, requiring re-commissioning of the system.
  • DATS Calibration: The DATS probe can be adjusted to ensure the discharge air sensor value aligns with the actual discharge air temperature target, optimizing system performance.
  • Wiring Verification: Regular checks of wiring connections between all devices (thermostat, DCM, indoor/outdoor units, sensors) are recommended to prevent communication problems and ensure proper operation.
  • Air Filter Maintenance: The system's performance, particularly in relation to static pressure and airflow, is sensitive to air filter loading. Regular air filter checks and replacements are crucial for maintaining optimal operation and preventing alert codes like "Primary Limit Switch Open."
