The Lennox XC16 is an ELITE® Series air conditioner designed for residential and non-residential installations, featuring R-410A refrigerant, a two-stage compressor, and SilentComfort™ Technology. It offers a SEER rating of up to 17.20 and is available in 2 to 5 tons, with cooling capacities ranging from 24,600 to 60,000 Btuh. This unit is ENERGY STAR® certified, indicating its energy efficiency and environmental benefits.
The primary function of the Lennox XC16 is to provide cooling for indoor spaces. It utilizes a two-stage Copeland Scroll Ultra Tech™ compressor, which allows for more precise temperature control and enhanced efficiency. In the first stage, the compressor operates at approximately 67% capacity, providing cost-effective cooling for milder conditions. When the thermostat calls for more cooling, the internal solenoid is energized, covering bypass ports, and the compressor operates at full capacity for second-stage cooling. This two-stage operation contributes to lower operational sound levels due to reduced gas pulses during compression.
The refrigeration system uses R-410A refrigerant, a non-chlorine, ozone-friendly option. The unit is pre-charged with refrigerant from the factory. An outdoor coil fan moves large air volumes uniformly through the condenser coil, maximizing refrigerant cooling capacity. The vertical air discharge design helps minimize operating sounds and prevents damage to surrounding lawns and shrubs.
The unit is equipped with several safety and control features. A high-pressure switch shuts off the unit if discharge pressure rises abnormally, protecting the compressor from excessive condensing pressure. This switch requires a manual reset. A low-pressure switch automatically resets and shuts off the unit if suction pressure falls below its setting, providing protection against loss of charge and freeze-up. A factory-installed hi-capacity liquid line drier traps moisture and dirt, preventing contamination of the refrigerant system.
Optional controls include the ComfortSense® 7000 Touchscreen Thermostat, an electronic 7-day, universal, multi-stage, programmable thermostat. This thermostat offers 4 Heat/2 Cool stages, auto-changeover, and humidity control during cooling. It also provides enhanced capabilities such as humidification/dehumidification/dewpoint measurement and control, Humiditrol® control, and equipment maintenance reminders. The menu-driven thermostat features a back-lit LCD touchscreen and can display outdoor temperature with an optional remote sensor.
The XC16 is designed for single-phase power supply and operates with sound levels as low as 74 dB, contributing to a quieter outdoor environment. Its vertical air discharge allows for flexible placement, such as concealment behind shrubs at grade level or on a roof, without affecting performance or aesthetics.
The unit is compatible with matching add-on furnace indoor coils or air handlers, offering a wide range of cooling capacities and applications. This flexibility ensures it can be integrated into various HVAC systems. The unit is shipped completely factory assembled, piped, and wired, and each unit is test-operated at the factory to ensure proper operation upon installation. The installer's primary tasks involve setting the air conditioner, connecting refrigerant lines, and making electrical connections.
Optional accessories enhance the unit's functionality. Expansion valve kits can be field-installed on certain indoor units. A freezestat can be installed on the indoor coil's discharge or suction line to sense temperature and cycle the compressor off if the suction line temperature falls below its setpoint, preventing freezing. Refrigerant line kits are available for easy installation, shipped clean, dried, pressurized, and sealed.
For low ambient conditions, an optional low ambient kit allows the air conditioner to operate satisfactorily down to 30°F outdoor air temperature, extending its operational range. A compressor hard start kit may be required in applications with supply voltage less than 230V to increase compressor starting torque. An indoor blower off delay relay can be added to delay the indoor blower-off time during the cooling cycle, and an indoor blower speed relay provides optimum humidity control by automatically reducing indoor blower speed during continuous fan or first-stage compressor operation.
The cabinet of the XC16 is constructed from heavy-gauge steel with a pre-painted finish, ensuring durability and corrosion resistance. The base section is also painted, and drainage holes are provided to prevent moisture accumulation. High-density polyethylene unit support feet raise the unit off the mounting surface, protecting it from damaging moisture.
Service access is made convenient through a large removable panel on the cabinet. The control box is centrally located with all controls factory wired. The SmartHinge™ louvered coil protection features steel louvered panels that provide complete coil protection. These panels are hinged, allowing for easy cleaning and servicing of the coils. They can also be completely removed for more extensive maintenance. Interlocking tabs and slots ensure a tight fit of the panels on the cabinet.
The copper tube/enhanced fin coil, designed and fabricated by Lennox, features ripple-edged aluminum fins and copper tube construction. Lanced fins maximize exposure of the fin surface to the air stream, resulting in excellent heat transfer. Fin collars grip tubing for maximum contact, and flared shoulder tubing connections with silver soldering ensure leak-proof construction. The entire coil is factory tested under high pressure and is fully accessible for cleaning.
Refrigerant line connections, electrical inlets, and fully serviceable brass service valves are located in one central area of the unit cabinet. The suction and liquid lines are made with sweat connections. The suction valve can be fully shut off, and the liquid valve can be front-seated to manage refrigerant charge during system servicing, simplifying maintenance procedures.
