Apower-onpassword(POP)protectsthesystemfrombeingpoweredonbyanunauthorizedperson.The
passwordmustbeenteredbeforeanoperatingsystemcanbebooted.ForhowtoremovethePOP ,see

Harddiskpassword
Therearetwoharddiskpasswords:
•Userharddiskpassword-fortheuser
•Masterharddiskpassword-forthesystemadministrator,whocanuseittogetaccesstotheharddisk
eveniftheuserhaschangedtheuserharddiskpassword.
Note:Therearetwomodesfortheharddiskpassword:UseronlyandMaster+User.TheMaster+User
moderequirestwoharddiskpasswords;thesystemadministratorentersbothinthesameoperation.The
systemadministratorthenprovidestheuserharddiskpasswordtothesystemuser.
Attention:Iftheuserharddiskpasswordhasbeenforgotten,checkwhetheramasterharddiskpassword
hasbeenset.Ifamasterharddiskpasswordhasbeenset,itcanbeusedtoaccesstheharddiskdrive.If
nomasterharddiskpasswordisavailable,neitherLenovonorLenovoauthorizedservicetechnicians
provideanyservicestoreseteithertheuserharddiskpasswordorthemasterharddiskpassword,or
torecoverdatafromtheharddiskdrive.Toputthesystembacktooperationalstatus,theonlyLenovo
andLenovo-authorizedservicesolutionwouldbetoreplacetheharddiskdriveorsolid-statedrivewith
ascheduledfee.

Supervisorpassword
AsupervisorpasswordprotectsthesysteminformationstoredintheThinkPadSetupprogram.Theuser
mustenterthesupervisorpasswordinordertogetaccesstotheThinkPadSetupprogramandchangethe
systemconguration.
Attention:Ifthesupervisorpasswordhasbeenforgottenandcannotbemadeavailabletotheservice
technician,thereisnoserviceproceduretoresetthepassword.Thesystemboardmustbereplacedfor
ascheduledfee.
Howtoremovethepower-onpassword
Toremoveapower-onpasswordthatyouhaveforgotten,dothefollowing:
Ifnosupervisorpasswordhasbeenset,dothefollowingtoremovethepower-onpassword:
1.Turnoffthecomputer.
2.Removethebatterypack.Forinstructionsonhowtoremovethebatterypack,see“1020Battery
pack”onpage63.
3.Removethebackupbattery.Forinstructionsonhowtoremovethebackupbattery,see“1080Backup
battery”onpage72.
4.TurnonthecomputerandwaituntilthePOSTends.AfterthePOSTends,thepasswordpromptwillnot
bedisplayed.Thepower-onpasswordhasbeenremoved.
5.Reinstallthebackupbatteryandthebatterypack.
