This document describes the ZL-R200A Heat Pump Water Heater Controller, a device designed to manage and optimize the operation of heat pump water heaters.
Function Description
The ZL-R200A controller offers a comprehensive set of functions to ensure efficient and reliable operation of a heat pump water heater system. Its core functions include:
- Auxiliary Heating Function: Provides supplementary heating when the heat pump alone cannot meet the demand, ensuring consistent hot water supply.
- Water Flowing Warning: Alerts the user to issues with water flow, which can indicate problems with the pump or piping.
- Ventilation Pump Control: Manages the operation of the ventilation pump, likely for heat exchange or system circulation.
- Antifreeze Function: Protects the system from freezing in cold conditions, preventing damage to pipes and components.
- Sensor Failures Action: Implements protective measures and alerts the user in case of sensor malfunctions.
- Auto Defrost Function: Automatically initiates defrost cycles to maintain the efficiency of the outdoor unit in cold weather.
- Auto Restart Function: Restarts the system automatically after a power outage, restoring previous settings.
- Exhaustion Temperature Protection: Safeguards the compressor by monitoring and acting upon high exhaustion temperatures.
- Compressor Delay and Pressure Protection: Incorporates delays for compressor starts and stops, and protects against high/low pressure conditions to extend compressor lifespan.

- Display Range: Capable of displaying temperatures from -40°C to 130°C.
- Working Temperature: Operates effectively in ambient temperatures ranging from 0°C to 50°C.
- Storage Temperature: Can be stored in temperatures from -10°C to 60°C.
- Ambient Humidity: Designed to function in humidity levels of 20% to 85% RH, non-condensing.
- Power Supply: Requires a 220Vac ±10% 50/60Hz power source.
- Load Capacity:
- Compressor: 15A
- Heating: 8A
- Others: 3A
Usage Features
The controller offers several user-friendly features for operation and monitoring:
- Working Modes:
- AUTO Mode: The system heats continuously according to the set temperature.
- SAVE Mode: Heating is restricted to three user-defined periods, allowing for energy saving.
- On/Off Control: The device can be switched between online and offline states by holding the power key for 3 seconds.
- Temperature Setting (SP): The desired water temperature can be set using the dedicated key, with a fast-set option available by holding the key. The factory default is 40°C.
- System Parameter Setting: Advanced parameters can be accessed and adjusted after entering a password. This includes settings for hysteresis, defrost start/stop times and temperatures, maximum defrost time, valve mode, exhaust protection temperature, and high/low pressure warning mode.
- Clock Setting: Users can set the current hour and minute for accurate timekeeping and scheduling.
- Periods Setting for "SAVE" Mode: Up to three heating periods can be configured, each with an on-time and an off-time. Periods with on-time and off-time set to 0 will be shut off. If the off-time is earlier than the on-time, it refers to the time on the second day.
- Keypad Lock: A keypad lock function (U81=1) restricts access to only the "S" and "M" keys, preventing unintended changes.
- Temperature Inquiry: Pressing the "S" key allows users to consecutively check the temperatures reported by all sensors, with results displayed for 3 seconds.
- Display Indications: The controller features a clear display with icons to indicate various operational states, such as online/offline, heating/not heating, compressor running/stop, pump running/stop, electrical heating on/off, four valves on/off, outdoor fan running/stop, locked/unlocked, and defrosting/not defrosting.
- Failure Code Display: In case of a malfunction, the controller displays specific failure codes (E01-E08) to help diagnose issues, such as sensor failures (water container, pipe coil, exhaustion, outdoor), water flow warning, high/low pressure input warning, data saving failure, and communication failure.
Maintenance Features
The ZL-R200A incorporates features that aid in system maintenance and longevity:
- Sensor Failure Warnings: The system provides warnings for various sensor failures, allowing for timely replacement or repair. For example, if the water sensor fails, the system stops heating.
- Pressure Protection: The high/low pressure protection system monitors pressure and stops the compressor if conditions are abnormal. If pressure protection occurs frequently (3 times within an hour or continuously for an hour), the controller enters a machine protection mode, preventing further heating until power is reset.
- Compressor Delay Protection: Delays for compressor starts (3 minutes after power-on or after stopping) protect the compressor from short cycling and extend its lifespan.
- Auto Defrost: The automatic defrost function prevents ice buildup on the outdoor coil, maintaining heating efficiency and preventing damage.
- Water Flow Monitoring: The controller stops the compressor and heater if no water flow is detected for 10 seconds, preventing dry running and potential damage.
- Anti-Freezing Protection: In offline standby, if the outdoor temperature drops to 2°C or below, the pump runs for 3 minutes every 30 minutes to prevent freezing.
- Exhaustion Over Temperature Protection: If the compressor's exhaustion temperature exceeds a set limit (U50), the compressor stops to prevent overheating.
- Data Saving Failure (E07): Alerts to issues with saving system data, which could indicate a problem with the controller's memory.
- Installation Guidelines: The manual emphasizes correct installation of all sensors, proper U34 setting, and indoor installation of the panel to ensure correct operation and longevity. It also warns against plugging/unplugging panel bundles with power supplied.
- Real Clock Backup: The real-time clock can maintain correct time for up to 72 hours after power loss, reducing the need for frequent time resets.
