Overview

The Logitech Harmony 720 Remote is an Internet-powered universal remote control designed to simplify the management of your home entertainment system. It can control most devices that understand infrared (IR) signals, offering a centralized solution for your various entertainment components.

Function Description

The primary function of the Harmony 720 Remote is to consolidate control of multiple entertainment devices into a single unit. Instead of juggling several remotes, you can use the Harmony 720 to manage your TV, DVD player, VCR, stereo receiver, and other compatible devices. Its "Activity" based control system is a key feature, allowing you to initiate a series of commands with a single button press. For example, selecting "Watch Television" can automatically turn on your TV and cable box, set the correct inputs, and configure the remote's buttons to control the TV's volume and the cable box's channels.

The remote's configuration is managed through the Logitech Harmony remote software, which guides you through a setup process. During this process, you provide information about your entertainment devices, how they are set up, and your control preferences. The software then creates a personalized configuration for your Harmony remote. If a device is not in the Harmony remote's database, the software can learn its commands from your original remote.

The Harmony 720 features a display screen that shows a list of your Activities and devices, as well as help information, infrared (IR) commands, and available listings. Display buttons located at the side of the screen allow you to select corresponding commands. Left/Right arrow buttons provide access to more options on the display.

"Smart Buttons" are also integrated, offering customizable functionality. While they have default settings for most Activities, you can personalize them to send different commands based on your needs. Standard remote buttons such as Power, Activities, Devices, Help, PREV (previous channel), MENU, GUIDE, EXIT, and INFO are also present, providing familiar control alongside the Harmony's unique features.

The remote includes an Infrared Learning Port, which is crucial for teaching the Harmony 720 commands from your original remotes. This port allows the Harmony remote to capture and store IR signals, which can then be assigned to buttons or display commands within your custom configuration.

Usage Features

Using the Harmony 720 Remote is designed to be intuitive, especially after the initial setup. Once configured, selecting an Activity from the display will automatically prepare your entertainment system. The remote will send the necessary commands to turn on devices and set inputs, and its buttons will automatically adapt their functions to that specific Activity. For instance, in a "Watch Television" Activity, the volume buttons will control your TV's volume, and the channel buttons will change channels on your cable box.

The remote incorporates a tilt sensor, which automatically turns on the display and keypad backlight when you pick up the remote slightly tilted. This feature enhances usability in low-light conditions and conserves battery life when the remote is not in use. You can enable or disable this tilt sensor feature through the Harmony Remote Software.

The "Help" button is a valuable feature for troubleshooting. If your Activity isn't working as expected (e.g., devices are out of sync), pressing "Help" will prompt the remote to ask simple questions to diagnose and fix the problem. This can happen if IR signals are blocked or not received properly during an Activity's startup. The Help feature can be customized to offer "Smart help" (asking about devices currently on) or "Full help" (asking about all devices in your system). Additionally, a "Remote Assistant" can be enabled to provide guidance on how to use your Harmony remote.

For direct control of individual components, the "Devices" mode allows you to select and control any specific device in your configuration. While Activities are the primary mode of operation, Device mode can be useful for sending a single, specific command to a particular device.

Customization is a core aspect of the Harmony 720. Through the Harmony Remote Software, you can:

  • Customize the display: This includes selecting themes, backgrounds, and layouts, as well as adding your own icons for favorite channels. The LCD screen resolution is 160 x 128 pixels, supporting image uploads up to 160 KB in .png, .bmp, .jpg, or .gif formats.
  • Change button behavior: You can modify the commands sent by the Smart Buttons or other buttons within an Activity. This allows you to assign specific commands to buttons or even set a single button to send commands to multiple devices simultaneously.
  • Add custom-labeled buttons: These can be added for specific devices or Activities, appearing on the Harmony remote's display.
  • Manage Activities and Devices: Add or delete Activities and devices, and modify their specific settings.
  • Adjust remote preferences: This includes settings like backlight timing, time-display format, and the "Starting Activity" message.

The "System Options" menu on the remote allows you to set the time and date, turn the slide show on/off (which displays while the remote is in the base station), and temporarily enable/disable the Remote Assistant.

Maintenance Features

The Harmony 720 Remote is designed for ease of maintenance, primarily focusing on battery management and software updates.

Recharging the Battery: The remote is equipped with a rechargeable battery. To charge it, simply place the remote in its base station. While charging, the display, its backlight, and the keypad backlight remain on. The battery level icon in the status bar will flash to indicate charging and will show a full battery level when charging is complete. When the battery is low, the display will flash a message to remind you to recharge. Consistent recharging ensures reliable performance and responsiveness from your remote. If devices stop responding consistently, recharging the battery is a recommended first step.

Software Updates: The Harmony Remote Software is essential for maintaining and updating your remote's configuration. After making any changes to your settings or configuration (e.g., adding new devices, customizing buttons), you must click "Update Remote" within the software. This action downloads the latest configuration and settings to your Harmony remote, ensuring it operates with your most recent preferences. Regular updates are crucial for incorporating new device codes and optimizing performance.

Learning Infrared (IR) Commands: For devices not in the Harmony database, or for specific commands you wish to teach, the remote's IR learning capability is a key maintenance feature. You can teach the Harmony remote commands from your original remotes using its infrared sensor. The process involves placing the original remote and the Harmony remote 5-10 cm apart, then pressing the desired button on the original remote. The Harmony remote learns the IR signal, uploads it via the USB cable to the Harmony remote database, and the software attempts to find a matching pattern. If no pattern is found, the signal is stored in its original format, ready to be assigned to a button on your Harmony remote. This ensures compatibility with a wide range of devices and allows for personalized command integration. When naming learned commands, following specific conventions (e.g., "VolumeUp" instead of "Volume Up") helps the software automatically assign them to the correct buttons.

Troubleshooting: The Harmony Remote Software includes a "Troubleshoot" feature to help diagnose and resolve issues when the remote is not controlling your system correctly. This, combined with the on-remote "Help" button and the comprehensive User Manual, provides multiple layers of support for maintaining optimal functionality. If issues persist, the Harmony Support Team is available for further assistance.
