Do you have a question about the magicpak EWC V-Series and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The MagicPak EWC V-Series™ is a self-contained electric heating and cooling HVAC system, designed for indoor installation. It is certified by Intertek and complies with Canadian Standards Association CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 236 (latest edition) and Underwriters Laboratories UL 1995, as well as AHRI Performance Standard 210/240. Any alterations to the internal wiring will void these certifications and warranties.

Function Description:

The EWC V-Series™ unit provides both electric heating and cooling functions. It is designed to operate automatically based on thermostat settings, maintaining desired indoor air temperatures. The unit integrates all necessary components for heating and cooling within a single chassis, simplifying installation and operation.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Supply: Factory-wired for a 230-volt power supply. Can be adapted for 208-volt supply by changing a wire connection on the unit transformer from the 240V terminal to the 208V terminal, as indicated in the wiring diagram.
  • Operating Voltage: The minimum operating voltage for 208-230 volt models is 197 volts. Operation outside of a voltage range exceeding 10% of the indicated rating plate voltage will void the compressor replacement warranty.
  • Refrigerant: The cooling chassis is charged with R410A refrigerant.
  • Blower: Features a direct drive, multi-speed blower motor. The proper speed is factory-set, but wiring connections can be referenced in the provided wiring diagram.
  • Airflow Performance (SCFM): Detailed in Table 2, showing supply airflow performance as a function of external static pressure for various models (EWC0512P12B, EWC0513P12A, EWC0712P12B, EWC0713P12A, EWC0512P18B, EWC0712P18B, EWC0513P18B, EWC0713P18B, EWC1012P18B, EWC1013P18B, EWC1012P24B, EWC1512P24B, EWC1012P30B, EWC1512P30B) across different indoor blower speeds (TAP 1-5) and external static pressures (0.1" w.c. to 0.5" w.c.) at 208 or 230 volts.
    • Heating Speeds: TAP 1 (HEAT), TAP 2 (HEAT), TAP 3 (HEAT). (* indicates as shipped speed for heating operation).
    • Cooling Speeds: TAP 4 (COOL)†, TAP 5 (COOL). († indicates as shipped speed for cooling operation).
    • For EWC**30B models, Low and High stage Cooling taps are connected for two-stage system use.
  • Filter Area (Disposable Filters): Minimum required surface area for disposable filters varies by model:
    • EWC*12: 300 sq. in.
    • EWC18, EWC24, EWC*30: 480 sq. in.
  • Ductwork Connections:
    • Supply duct connects to the top of the unit using a canvas or flexible connection to prevent noise transmission.
    • Return duct connects to the bottom of the unit, requiring a straight piece of duct 22" wide by 6" deep, flanged over existing flanges inside the unit.
  • Condensate Drain: Utilizes a 5/8" O.D. plastic tube connected to the condensate pan, pitching gradually downward at least 1" per 10 feet of horizontal run to an open drain trap.

Usage Features:

  • Thermostat Control: The unit's operation is controlled by a thermostat. Users can set the system switch to "HEAT" or "COOL" and adjust the temperature scale to their desired setting.
  • Blower Operation: The thermostat's fan switch allows for continuous blower operation ("ON") or automatic cycling with the thermostat ("AUTO").
  • Two-Stage Compressor (EWC*30 models): For EWC*30 models, a two-stage thermostat is recommended to achieve the highest efficiency and full use of the two-stage compressor.
  • Shutdown: For temporary shutdown, set the thermostat system switch to "OFF." For prolonged shutdown, also turn off the electrical power supply.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cooling Chassis: The refrigeration system is a closed, self-contained system and normally requires no maintenance.
  • Air Filter: A permanent-type filter is furnished with the unit, located directly in front of the evaporator coil behind the filter access panel.
    • Cleaning: The filter should be cleaned at least once during each heating and cooling season, or more frequently in dusty conditions. To clean, shake off excess dirt, use a vacuum cleaner, or wash with soap and detergent water, then re-install when dry. The filter does not require oiling.
    • Alternative Filter Mounting: If the filter is mounted externally in the return ductwork, a disposable filter can be used, with minimum area requirements specified in Table 1.
  • Condenser Coil: Should be cleaned if covered with foreign material (lint, leaves, obstructions).
  • Motors: Permanently lubricated, generally do not require re-oiling.
  • Cooling Chassis Removal (for major repairs/inspection):
    1. Shut off main power supply.
    2. Remove filter access panel and control panel cover.
    3. Remove drain hose from drain pan.
    4. Disconnect plug-in electrical connectors by grasping the connector handle (not the wires).
    5. Disconnect two power leads from the contactor (from the grommet in the unit partition).
    6. Remove screws from the panel in front of the blower and the additional screws near the top edge of the control panel. Remove the panel.
    7. Drape power wires and wire harnesses out of the cabinet and tape to the upper panel.
    8. Carefully slide out the chassis, ensuring no damage to seals, parts, or wiring. Note: Tubing is not to be used as a handle.
    • Re-installation: Reverse the removal procedure. Ensure the chassis is fully inserted, side flanges engage sealing strips, and all connectors and panels are reconnected before restoring power.
  • Heating Section: No maintenance is necessary for the electric heating elements.
