Overview

The MAHLE MCX-2F is a Multiple Coolant Exchanger designed for automotive cooling system maintenance, featuring flush and flow indicator capabilities. This device facilitates the replacement of old coolant with new, performs engine flushing, and allows for testing the cooling system for leaks.

Function Description:

The MCX-2F operates by connecting to the vehicle's cooling system, either at the engine or radiator, using adapter hoses and step adapters. It can perform several key functions:

  • Coolant Replacement: The unit exchanges old coolant from the vehicle's system with new coolant from its internal tank. The process involves lowering the existing coolant level, connecting the MCX-2F, and then pumping new coolant into the system while simultaneously drawing out the old coolant. The system's capacity and coolant type are determined from the vehicle's owner's manual.
  • Engine Flush: When both front panel valves are set to "BYPASS," the MCX-2F allows the vehicle's coolant to bypass the unit, flowing through the green and black hoses connected internally. This enables the addition of chemical additives (flush or leak sealant) to the radiator fill port, which can then circulate throughout the cooling system by running the engine. This feature eliminates the need to make connections involving hot coolant when adding additives.
  • Coolant System Leak Test: The MCX-2F can pressurize the coolant system to check for leaks. The System Pressure Gauge on the unit monitors for any drop in pressure, which would indicate a leak. The system is pressurized to 10-13 PSI for this test.
  • Radiator Pressure Relief: The unit can relieve pressure in a hot radiator by drawing a vacuum on the overflow port of the radiator cap. Shop air (55-100 PSI) connected to the rear port creates a vacuum, causing the radiator cap to open and release pressure. The System Vacuum Gauge indicates the vacuum level, and a small amount of coolant will flow through a clear hose during pressure release.
  • Coolant Level Lowering: The MCX-2F can lower the coolant level in the radiator and overflow container using a wand attached to the black hose, pumping the coolant into the waste tank.
  • Changing Coolant Type: A clearing process purges coolant from the hoses and pumps before changing the new coolant tank, allowing for easy switching between different coolant types. This involves emptying the existing coolant from the hoses and pump into the new coolant tank, then connecting a tank with the desired new coolant type.
  • Waste Tank Emptying: The waste tank can be emptied either by removing it from the MCX-2F and transporting it, or by using the MCX-2F to pump the waste coolant directly into another collection tank. A float switch in the waste tank automatically shuts off the pump when the tank is empty.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Requirement: The unit requires a 12-volt battery connection.
  • Radiator Pressure Relief Air Supply: Requires shop air at 55 to 100 PSI.
  • Coolant Tank Scales: Tank levels are graduated in quarts and liters (1 Gallon = 4 Quarts).
  • Fuses: Uses a Fuse 15 AMP (Part Number: 025-80326-00).
  • Pump Impeller Styles: Available with 3-Bolt Style Impeller & Gasket (Part Number: 370-80165-00) or 4-Bolt Style Impeller & Gasket (Part Number: 370-80166-00) for the waste pump.

Usage Features:

  • Control Panel: Features three selector switches for "LOWER RADIATOR & OVERFLOW," "TEST," and "EXCHANGE COOLANT OR FILL RADIATOR & OVERFLOW," each with ON/OFF positions. It also includes System Pressure and System Vacuum gauges.
  • Valves: Two front panel valves with "EXCHANGE" and "BYPASS" positions control coolant flow.
  • Hose Connections: Utilizes green and black hoses for connection to the vehicle's cooling system, along with various adapter hoses and step adapters (1-1/4, 1-3/8, 1-1/2, 1-3/4, 2-1/4, 2-1/2 inch sizes).
  • Wand: A wand is provided for lowering coolant levels and filling the radiator/overflow container.
  • Tank Visibility: The New Coolant Tank is designed to slide to the front of the unit, allowing the liquid level to be seen through a front panel slot.
  • Safety: The manual emphasizes wearing proper eye and skin protection, allowing the cooling system to cool down before removing caps/hoses, and exercising caution around batteries due to explosive gases. Coolants are poisonous and corrosive, requiring immediate cleanup of spills.

Maintenance Features:

  • Filter & Bowl: The unit includes a filter and bowl, which are installed on the rear of the MCX-2F.
  • Waste Pump Impeller Replacement: The waste pump impeller may require periodic replacement due to impurities in recovered coolant. The process is straightforward: remove the hose holder, screws, cover plate, gasket, and worn impeller; coat the new impeller with Vaseline® petroleum jelly, align flats, press onto the shaft, attach a new gasket and cover plate, and replace the hose holder.
  • Tank Venting: Plugs must be removed from the caps of the Waste Tank and New Coolant Tank for proper venting during operation.
  • Part Replacement: A comprehensive list of replacement parts is provided, including adapter hoses, step adapters, fuse, impeller & gasket, new coolant tank, waste tank, and wand. Parts can be ordered by phone or through the MAHLE website.
