Overview

This document provides instructions for the Makita JS1000 Metal Shear and JS1601 Straight Metal Shear, covering their function, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description

The Makita Metal Shear/Straight Metal Shear is a power tool designed for cutting sheet steel and stainless sheet steel. It operates on a single-phase AC supply and is double-insulated, allowing it to be used from sockets without an earth wire. The tool is equipped with a switch lever for operation, which can be locked in the "ON" position for continuous use. The cutting mechanism involves a center blade and side blades, with an adjustable clearance for different workpiece thicknesses, particularly for the JS1601 model.

Usage Features

Starting and Stopping the Tool: To start the tool, slide the switch lever towards the "I (ON)" position. For continuous operation, press the front of the switch lever to lock it. To stop the tool, press the rear of the switch lever, then slide it towards the "O (OFF)" position. Always ensure the switch lever actuates properly and returns to the "OFF" position when depressed before plugging in the tool. When locking the tool in the "ON" position, maintain a firm grasp.

Adjusting Blade Clearance (JS1601 Only): Before adjusting, ensure the tool is switched off and unplugged. The clearance between the side blade and the center blade should be adjusted according to the thickness of the workpiece. Use a hex wrench to loosen the screw. Then, use the hex wrench to adjust the clearance by tightening or loosening the bolt. Check the smaller clearance with a thickness gauge and adjust it as needed. After adjusting, securely tighten the screw.

Operation: Always hold the tool firmly with one hand on the housing and avoid touching the metal part during operation. Turn the tool on and set the front ends of the side blades on the workpiece. Then, simply move the tool forward, keeping the side blades flush with the workpiece surface. When cutting a small portion of the workpiece, you may have difficulty completing the end of the cut. In such cases, try cutting it again by pulling the workpiece back slightly.

Safety Precautions:

  • Always wear ear protection.
  • Wear eye protection, such as goggles complying with ANSI Z87.1 (USA), EN 166 (Europe), or AS/NZS 1336 (Australia/New Zealand). In Australia/New Zealand, a face shield is also legally required.
  • Keep hands away from moving parts.
  • Wear gloves and thickly bottomed shoes to prevent injury from sharp edges and chips of the workpiece.
  • Do not place the tool on the chips of the workpiece, as this can cause damage.
  • Operate the tool only when hand-held and ensure a firm footing.
  • Do not touch the blade or workpiece immediately after operation, as they may be extremely hot.
  • Avoid cutting electrical wires to prevent serious accidents by electric shock.
  • Do not operate the tool at no-load unnecessarily.
  • Keep the work area clean and well lit.
  • Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres.
  • Keep children and bystanders away.
  • Power tool plugs must match the outlet; never modify the plug.
  • Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces.
  • Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions.
  • Do not abuse the cord; keep it away from heat, oil, sharp edges, or moving parts.
  • When operating outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use.
  • If operating in a damp location, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply.
  • Do not touch the power plug with wet hands.
  • If the cord is damaged, have it replaced by the manufacturer or agent.
  • Stay alert and use common sense; do not operate when tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication.
  • Prevent unintentional starting by ensuring the switch is in the off-position before connecting to a power source or battery pack.
  • Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on.
  • Do not overreach; maintain proper footing and balance.
  • Dress properly; do not wear loose clothing or jewelry.
  • If dust extraction facilities are provided, ensure they are connected and used properly.
  • Do not let familiarity with the tool lead to complacency regarding safety principles.
  • When using the tool, do not wear cloth work gloves which may become entangled.

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance: Always ensure the tool is switched off and unplugged before attempting to perform inspection or maintenance. Never use gasoline, benzine, thinner, alcohol, or similar substances, as they can cause discoloration, deformation, or cracks. To maintain product safety and reliability, repairs, maintenance, or adjustments should be performed by Makita Authorized Service Centers, using only Makita replacement parts.

Lubrication: Before operation, lubricate the contact point of the center blade and the pin. To maintain good cutting performance, it is also recommended to use a cutting lubricant from time to time during operation.

Storing the Hex Wrench: The hex wrench can be stored on the tool itself when not in use, as shown in the provided figure.

Cleaning: Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control. Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean, and free from oil and grease to ensure safe handling and control.

Storage: Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate it.

Inspection: Regularly check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect the power tool's operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use.
