Introduction
Enclosed type switching power supplies possess a metal or plastic case for covering their internal PCB and will be
installed inside the case of the end system. Mean Well’s enclosed type power supplies include 2 different groups of
power supplies, with built-in fan and without built-in fan, depending on their rated power or design concept.
Installation
1Before any installation or maintenance work, please disconnect your system from the utility.
Ensure that it can’t be re-connected inadvertently!
2Keep enough insulation distance between mounting screws and internal components of power supplies. Please
refer to case drawing on specifications to receive the maximum length of mounting screw.
3Mounting orientations other than standard orientation or operate under high ambient temperature may
increase the internal component temperature and will require a de-rating in output current. Please refer to
the specification sheets to receive the optimum mounting position and information about the de-rating curve.
4Fans and ventilation holes must be kept free from any obstructions. Also a 10-15 cm clearance must be kept
when the adjacent device is a heat source.

Function Description:

The primary function of these devices is to provide a stable power supply within an enclosed system. As switching power supplies, they efficiently convert AC input power to DC output power, suitable for various electronic applications. The "enclosed type" designation indicates that the internal PCB is protected by a metal or plastic case, making them suitable for integration into larger systems where they are not directly exposed to the external environment.

Terminal Screw Torque Specifications:

The manual provides detailed torque specifications for terminal screws, which are crucial for ensuring secure electrical connections and preventing poor contact. These specifications vary depending on the power supply series and the screw size.

  • M4 Screws (for high-power series):

    • Series: RSP-750/1000/1500/2000/2400/3000, SE-450/1000/1500, HEP-600, HRP-300, HRP-300N, HRP-300N3, HRPG-300, MSP-300, SP-480, SP-750, SPV-1500, USP-500, RST-10000.
    • Suggested Torque: 10-12 kgf-cm.
  • M3.5 Screws (for mid-power series):

  • M3 Screws (for lower-power series):

    • Series: RSP-1600, RD-035, RT-050/065/085/125, RQ-050/065/085/125, TP-075/100/150, QP-100/150, RS-015/025, NES-015, USP-150, NSP-1600/3200.
    • Suggested Torque: 6-8 kgf-cm.
  • #6 Screws (for specific series):

    • Series: ERP-350, HDP-190/240, NEL-200/300.
    • Suggested Torque: 8-10 kgf-cm.
  • M2.6 Screws (for ENP series):

    • Series: ENP-120/180/240/360.
    • Suggested Torque: 4-5 kgf-cm.
  • Input/Output Terminal Screw Torque (various series):

    • HRP-450/600/600N/600N3, HRPG-450/600, MSP-450/600/1000, SE-600: Input M3 (6-8kgf-cm), Output M4 (10-12kgf-cm).
    • HSP-150/200/300, HSN-200/300: Input M3 (6-8kgf-cm), Output M3.5 (8-10kgf-cm).
    • RSP-500: Input M3.5 (8-10kgf-cm), Output M4 (10-12kgf-cm).
    • RST-5000: Input M4 (10-12kgf-cm), Output M8 (10-12kgf-cm).
    • NEL-400: Input #6 (8-10kgf-cm), Output M3 (8-10kgf-cm).
    • UHP-200(R)/350(R): Input M3 (5kgf-cm), Output M3.5 (8kgf-cm).
    • UHP-200A: Input M3.5 (13kgf-cm), Output M3.5 (8kgf-cm).
    • CSP-3000: Input M4 (10-12kgf-cm), Output M6 (13kgf-cm).
    • UHP-500(R)/750/1000: Input M3 (5kgf-cm), Output M4 (10-12kgf-cm).
    • HEP-600/1000: Input M4 (10-12kgf-cm), Output M4 (10-12kgf-cm).

The manual provides guidelines for wire gauges (AWG) and corresponding cross-sections (mm²) based on the rated current of the equipment.

  • 6A: AWG 18 (0.75 mm²)
  • 6-10A: AWG 16 (1.00 mm²)
  • 10-16A: AWG 14 (1.5 mm²)
  • 16-25A: AWG 12 (2.5 mm²)
  • 25-32A: AWG 10 (4 mm²)
  • 32-40A: AWG 8 (6 mm²)

Note: When using 5 or more wires connected to the unit, the current each wire carries should be de-rated to 80% of the suggested current. All strands of stranded wire must fully enter the terminal connection, and screw terminals must be securely fixed to prevent poor contact.

China RoHS Conformity:

Mean Well confirms that its products comply with China RoHS (Administrative Measures for the Restriction of the Use of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Products). The Environment Friendly Use Period Label indicates a period of 10 years.

The manual details the concentration of hazardous substances in various components:

  • PCB and its components: Lead (Pb) - X (over limits, but follows 2011/65/EU), Mercury (Hg) - O (less than limits), Cadmium (Cd) - X (over limits, but follows 2011/65/EU), Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) - O, Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) - O, Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) - O.

China VOC Conformity:

Mean Well products comply with China's Standardization Administration Releases VOC Standards, including:

  • GB 30981-2020: Limit of harmful substances of industrial protective coatings.
  • GB 33372-2020: Limits for volatile organic compounds content in adhesive.
  • GB 38507-2020: Limits for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) In printing ink.
  • GB 38508-2020: Limits for volatile organic compounds content in cleaning agents.

Five PBT TSCA Conformity:

Mean Well confirms that its product series comply with Use and Risk Management for Five PBT Chemicals under TSCA section 6(h):

  • 1163-19-5: Decabromodiphenyl ether (DecaBDE)
  • 68937-41-7: Phenol, isopropylated, phosphate (3:1) (PIP (3:1))
  • 732-26-3: 2,4,6-Tris (tert-butyl) phenol (2,4,6-TTBP)
  • 133-49-3: Pentachlorothiophenol (PCTP)
  • 87-68-3: Hexachlorobutadiene (HCBD)

Usage Features:

Installation Guidelines:

  • Safety First: Always disconnect the system from utility power before any installation or maintenance. Ensure it cannot be re-connected inadvertently.
  • Insulation Distance: Maintain sufficient insulation distance between mounting screws and internal components. Refer to the case drawing on specifications for maximum mounting screw length.
  • Mounting Orientation and Temperature: Non-standard mounting orientations or operation under high ambient temperatures may increase internal component temperature, requiring output current de-rating. Consult specification sheets for optimum mounting positions and de-rating curves.
  • Ventilation: Keep fans and ventilation holes free from obstructions. Maintain a 10-15 cm clearance from any adjacent heat sources.
  • Wiring:
    • FG Wire (Ground): Connect the green or green/yellow FG wire of the power supply to PE (green or green/yellow). This step is optional for Class II units (ungrounded).
    • ACL Wire (Live): Connect the black or brown ACL wire of the power supply to Live (black or brown).
    • ACN Wire (Neutral): Connect the white or blue ACN wire of the power supply to Neutral (white or blue).
    • Ensure all wires are securely fastened to prevent poor contact.
    • Wire color coding varies by country: North America (Black for Live, White for Neutral, Green for PE/FG) and European Harmonized (Brown for Live, Blue for Neutral, Green/yellow for PE/FG).

General Warnings and Cautions:

  • Electrical Shock Hazard: Only qualified technicians should examine failures. Do not remove the power supply case yourself.
  • Environmental Conditions: Avoid installing power supplies in high moisture areas, near water, or in places with high ambient temperatures or near fire sources. Refer to specifications for maximum ambient temperature.
  • Output Limits: Output current and wattage must not exceed the rated values specified.
  • Grounding: The ground (FG) must be connected to earth ground.
  • EMC Compliance: Mean Well PSUs comply with EMC regulations. However, as component power supplies, their EMC characteristics must be re-verified when integrated into an end system enclosure.
  • FCC Compliance: The device complies with Part 15 of FCC Rules, meaning it may not cause harmful interference and must accept any interference received.
  • BSMI Approvals: For LRS, NES, PSP, PSPA, RD, RSP, RS, SE series with BSMI approvals, V1 or above flammability is required for surrounding equipment. Operation in a residential environment may cause radio interference.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Inspection: Periodically check terminal screw torques, especially if the unit experiences vibration, as torque can vary due to different materials. The manual provides recommended torque charts for both aluminum and iron screws, in imperial and metric units.
  • Wire Integrity: Ensure all wire connections remain secure and free from damage or corrosion.
  • Ventilation Clearance: Regularly check that fans and ventilation holes are clear of dust and obstructions to maintain optimal cooling.
  • Environmental Monitoring: Ensure the operating environment remains within specified temperature and humidity limits to prolong the lifespan of the power supply.
  • Troubleshooting (Qualified Personnel Only): Any failure or issue should be addressed by a qualified technician due to the risk of electrical shock and energy hazards. Users should not attempt to remove the power supply case.
