Overview

The Milwaukee MW102 PRO pH/Temperature Meter is a portable instrument designed for accurate pH and temperature measurements. It is a robust device suitable for various applications, from laboratory use to field measurements, offering a blend of precision and user-friendly features.

Function Description

The primary function of the MW102 is to measure pH and temperature. It utilizes a pH electrode with a BNC connector and a separate temperature probe to achieve these measurements. The device is capable of displaying pH readings over a wide range and temperature readings in Celsius. A key feature is its Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC), which ensures that pH readings are accurate regardless of sample temperature fluctuations. This is achieved by the integrated temperature probe, which can also be used independently for temperature-only measurements. The meter is powered by a 9V alkaline battery, providing extended operational time.

Usage Features

The MW102 is designed for ease of use, with several features that streamline the measurement process:

  • Simple Operation: To begin, the user connects the pH electrode and temperature probe to the meter's top sockets. The instrument is turned on by pressing the ON/OFF key. Before taking measurements, it is crucial to ensure the meter has been properly calibrated.
  • Measurement Procedure: Once the electrode and probe are immersed in the sample, the pH measurement is ready when an hourglass symbol on the display turns off, indicating a stable reading. The temperature can be displayed by pressing and holding the "°C" key; releasing it returns the display to the pH reading.
  • Hold Function: For convenience, the meter includes a HOLD function. Pressing the HOLD key freezes the current measured value on the display, and a "HOLD" tag illuminates. Releasing the key resumes live readings.
  • Calibration Procedure: The MW102 supports both offset and slope calibration, ensuring high accuracy. Calibration is performed using standard pH buffer solutions (pH 7.01, and either pH 4.01 or pH 10.01, depending on the measurement range). The process involves immersing the electrode and probe into the buffer solution, entering calibration mode via the CAL key, and confirming the calibration with the CFM key once the reading stabilizes. The meter guides the user through the calibration steps, flashing the required buffer value on the display. It also allows for single-point calibration at pH 7.01 if desired.
  • Error Messages: The device provides clear error messages to inform the user of potential issues. These include blinking full-scale values for out-of-range readings, "Eb" for low battery, "Ec" for incorrect buffer solutions, and "Ec" with blinking "°C" if the calibration temperature is out of range. A "Clr" message indicates that calibration data has been lost, necessitating recalibration.
  • Automatic Shut-off: To conserve battery life, the MW102 features an auto-off function, which powers down the device after 8 minutes of inactivity.
  • Battery Error Prevention System (BEPS): This system prevents erroneous readings due to low battery levels. When the battery is weak, the battery symbol on the LCD blinks, and the meter will display "Eb" before automatically turning off, prompting the user for battery replacement.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is essential for the longevity and accuracy of the MW102 meter and its probes:

  • Electrode Care: Before each measurement, the electrode protective cap must be removed. If the electrode has dried out, it should be reactivated by soaking its tip in rinse solution for a few minutes. After measurements are complete, the meter should be switched off, and the electrode stored with a few drops of storage solution in its protective cap to prevent drying and maintain its performance.
  • Battery Replacement: The meter is powered by a 9V alkaline battery. When the battery symbol blinks or the "Eb" message appears, prompt battery replacement is required. This should be done in a non-hazardous area. The battery compartment cover, located at the rear of the meter, slides off, allowing the user to replace the battery. It is important to ensure the battery contacts are fully engaged in the connector and the battery is properly seated before replacing the cover.
  • Cleaning: General cleaning solution (MA9016) is available for maintaining the pH electrode.
  • Disposal: The MW102 conforms to CE European Directives regarding the disposal of electrical and electronic equipment, as well as waste batteries. Users are advised not to treat these as household waste but to hand them over to appropriate collection points for recycling. This ensures proper disposal and prevents potential negative consequences for human health and the environment.
  • Warranty: The instrument comes with a 2-year warranty against defects in materials and manufacturing, while the probe is warranted for 6 months. This warranty covers repair or free replacement if the instrument cannot be repaired, but it does not cover damage due to accidents, misuse, tampering, or lack of prescribed maintenance. For service, users should contact their local Milwaukee Instruments Technical Service. When shipping the meter for service, it should be properly packaged for complete protection.
