Overview

The Milwaukee pH55 and pH56 PRO Waterproof pH/Temperature Testers are handheld devices designed for accurate measurement of pH and temperature. These testers are built to be robust and are suitable for various applications, including those requiring high accuracy and operation in challenging environments.

Function Description:

The primary function of these testers is to measure pH and temperature simultaneously. The pH value is displayed on the main LCD, while the temperature is shown on the secondary LCD. The devices feature automatic temperature compensation (ATC) to ensure accurate pH readings across varying temperatures. They also incorporate an instability indicator (hourglass) that turns off once the reading stabilizes, providing confidence in the measurement. The testers are equipped with a Battery Error Prevention System (BEPS) to prevent erroneous readings due to low battery levels by automatically switching off the device when batteries are weak.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • pH Range:
    • pH55: -2.0 to 16.0 pH
    • pH56: -2.00 to 16.00 pH
  • Temperature Range: -5.0 to 60.0°C / 23.0 to 140.0°F
  • pH Resolution:
    • pH55: 0.1 pH
    • pH56: 0.01 pH
  • Temperature Resolution: 0.1°C / 0.1°F
  • pH Accuracy (@25°C):
    • pH55: ±0.1 pH
    • pH56: ±0.05 pH
  • Temperature Accuracy (@25°C): ±0.5°C / ±1°F
  • Typical EMC Deviation:
    • pH55: ±0.1 pH
    • pH56: ±0.02 pH
    • Temperature: ±0.3°C / ±0.6°F
  • Temperature Compensation: Automatic, from -5 to 60°C
  • Calibration: Automatic, 1 or 2 points with 2 sets of memorized buffers (pH 4.01, 7.01, 10.01 or 4.01, 6.86, 9.18)
  • Probe: Replaceable MI56P
  • Environment: -5 to 50°C; 100% RH max.
  • Battery Type: 4 x 1.5V; IEC LR44, A76
  • Battery Life: Approx. 300 hours of use
  • Auto-Off: After 8 minutes of non-use
  • Dimensions: 200 x dia 38 mm
  • Weight: 100 g

Usage Features:

  • Activation and Measurement: To begin, the electrode needs to be activated by immersing it in MA9015 storage solution for 2 hours. The tester is turned on by pressing the ON/OFF button. After immersing the electrode in the solution to be tested, gentle stirring and waiting for the instability indicator to turn off will provide a stable reading.
  • Display: The main LCD shows the pH value, while the secondary LCD displays the temperature. A "CAL" tag indicates when the tester is calibrated.
  • Hold Function: In measurement mode, pressing and holding the SET/HOLD button freezes the display, showing "HOLD" on the secondary display. Any button press returns to normal mode.
  • Auto-Off: The device automatically turns off after 8 minutes of non-use to conserve battery life. An "OFF" message appears on the secondary display before shutdown.
  • Calibration Procedure:
    • Entering Calibration: Press and hold the ON/OFF/CAL button until "CAL" appears on the secondary LCD.
    • Buffer Recognition: The tester automatically recognizes the buffer solution (e.g., pH 7.01, 4.01, 10.01). If an invalid buffer is detected, "WRNG" is displayed.
    • Single-Point Calibration: Immerse the electrode in any valid buffer. If using pH 7.01 (or 6.86), press SET to exit, and "OK 1" confirms the calibration.
    • Two-Point Calibration: Recommended for better accuracy. Start with pH 7.01 (or 6.86), then rinse and immerse in the second buffer (pH 4.01, 10.01, or 9.18). "OK 2" confirms successful two-point calibration.
    • Exiting Calibration: Press ON/OFF during calibration mode to return to normal measurement without saving changes ("ESC" is displayed).
    • Reset Calibration: Press SET/HOLD after entering calibration mode (before the first point is accepted) to reset to default values and clear previous calibration ("CLR" is displayed).
  • Setup Mode: Allows selection of temperature unit (°C or °F) and pH buffer set (pH 7.01 BUFF or pH 6.86 BUFF for NIST). Enter setup by pressing ON/OFF until "TEMP" is displayed. Use SET/HOLD to change settings and ON/OFF to navigate or exit.

Maintenance Features:

  • Electrode Care: After use, the electrode should be rinsed with water to minimize contamination and stored with a few drops of MA9015 storage solution or pH7 (M10007) solution in the protective cap. Distilled or deionized water should never be used for storage.
  • Electrode Replacement: The MI56P electrode is replaceable. To replace, unscrew the plastic ring on top, pull out the old electrode, and insert a new one, ensuring gaskets are in place before screwing the ring back.
  • Battery Replacement: When the battery symbol lights up on the LCD, it indicates weak batteries and advises replacement. The tester uses four 1.5V IEC LR44 (A76) batteries. To replace, unscrew the battery compartment cap, replace the four batteries, paying attention to polarity, and ensure the gasket is in place before re-screwing the cap. Batteries should only be replaced in a non-hazardous area.
  • Calibration Frequency: Frequent calibration is recommended for better accuracy, especially after electrode replacement, testing aggressive chemicals, or when extreme accuracy is required.
  • Accessories: A range of buffer solutions (pH 4.01, 7.01, 10.01, 6.86, 9.18), electrode storage solution (MA9015), electrode cleaning solution (MA9016), and electrode rinse solution (M10000B) are available to support the maintenance and calibration of the device.
  • Disposal: The product and its batteries should not be treated as household waste. They should be handed over to appropriate collection points for recycling electrical and electronic equipment and waste batteries, respectively, in accordance with CE European Directives.
