Overview

The TAPGUARD® 260 is a monitoring system designed for on-load tap-changers (OLTCs) in transformers. This quick reference guide provides essential information for quick start-up and basic operation, though it does not replace the comprehensive operating instructions.

Function Description

The primary function of the TAPGUARD® 260 is to monitor the operational status and critical parameters of an on-load tap-changer. It collects data related to load current, motor drive temperature, ambient temperature, transformer oil temperature, and diverter switch oil temperature. This data is used to assess the condition of the OLTC, calculate wear values, and manage maintenance intervals. The system is equipped with a display for local monitoring and can be configured and parameterized via a serial interface (COM1 RS232) using the TAPCON®-trol visualization software.

Key operational aspects include:

  • Parameterization and Configuration: The device can be configured using keys on the front panel or through the TAPCON®-trol software on a connected PC.
  • Key Lock: A safety feature to prevent unintentional operation, activated/deactivated by simultaneously pressing the ESC and F5 keys.
  • Manual Mode: An additional safety feature that protects parameters from unintentional changes. When active, acknowledging events, acknowledging maintenance, and changing parameters are restricted. Manual mode is activated by pressing the key and automatically deactivates after 5 minutes of inactivity.
  • Temperature Monitoring: The system monitors the temperature of the diverter switch oil and transformer oil using dedicated sensors.
  • Load Current Measurement: It measures the load current, which is crucial for calculating wear and other operational parameters.
  • Tap-Change Supervisory Control: Integrated into the tap changer, this control provides data to the monitoring system.
  • Cooling System Control: The system can manage the cooling system, with parameters configurable according to the specific system configuration.
  • Event Monitoring: The system continuously monitors various events during operation, issuing corresponding messages displayed on the device. These events are categorized by priority (Green for general status, Yellow for announcements/warnings, Red for immediate action required).

Important Technical Specifications

While specific numerical technical specifications are not detailed in this quick reference guide, the document highlights several important features:

  • Interfaces:
    • Serial Interface (COM1 RS232): Located on the front panel for PC connection, supporting various baud rates (e.g., 57.6 kBaud). An optional USB adapter can be used.
    • Communication Cards (CIC1, CIC2, SID): The device supports various communication protocols including IEC 60870-5-101, IEC 60870-5-103, MODBUS ASCII/RTU, DNP3, ABB SPA, TAPCON®-trol, and IEC 61850 (via SID card). These interfaces allow integration into control systems.
  • Load Current Measurement Inputs: Supports 4...20 mA (AD8 card) or 0.2 A, 1 A, or 5 A (MI card) signals.
  • Status Relay: Provides a signal to the control room indicating the current status of the device.
  • Firmware and Device ID: The system allows for displaying its firmware version (date) and unique device ID.

Usage Features

The TAPGUARD® 260 is designed for user-friendly operation, both locally and remotely:

  • Front Panel Operation: Keys on the front panel allow for parameterization and configuration. The display shows current measurements, event messages, and menu options.
  • TAPCON®-trol Software: This visualization software, provided on a CD, enables comprehensive parameterization via the serial interface, offering a more detailed configuration experience.
  • Displaying Measurements: Users can access "MEAS. VALUES" to view real-time data such as load current, motor drive temperature, ambient temperature, transformer oil temperature, and diverter switch oil temperature.
  • Setting Date and Time: The system date and time can be set in DD.MM.YY and HH:MM:SS formats, respectively. Manual adjustment is required for daylight saving time changes.
  • Language Selection: The display language can be configured (e.g., English, Deutsch, Italiano, Português, Français, Russian, Español).
  • Commissioning Mode: A special mode that resets maintenance intervals, activated during the initial setup of the transformer at the installation site. This mode automatically deactivates after a load current is measured for more than 1 minute or 8 hours after activation.
  • Test Operations: Allows for performing test operations without affecting wear and soot calculations.
  • Event LED: An LED on the device indicates the status (green for normal, yellow/red for events).
  • Event Overview: Recorded event messages can be displayed, categorized by priority (Red alarm messages trigger a relay, blocking further tap-change operations).
  • Customizable Event Texts: Event messages can be adapted to customer requirements using the TAPCON®-trol software.

Maintenance Features

The TAPGUARD® 260 incorporates features to assist with and track maintenance activities:

  • Maintenance Confirmation: After maintenance work is performed on the OLTC, it must be confirmed in the monitoring system. This prevents new maintenance events from being generated and records the activity in the maintenance history database.
  • Wear Value Entry: Wear values of on-load tap-changer contacts, measured during maintenance, must be entered before confirming maintenance.
  • Maintenance Criteria: The system tracks various maintenance types and their confirmation criteria, including:
    • Abrasion parts (based on MR standards).
    • Oil change and cleaning (diverter switch insert, oil compartment, oil conservator).
    • Diverter switch insert replacement.
    • Tap selector inspection.
    • Oil sample analysis (adherence to MR specified limit values).
    • On-site tap-change operations count.
    • On-site time.
    • Oil filter change (if an oil filter unit is fitted).
  • Maintenance Event Acknowledgment: Maintenance events can be acknowledged, similar to other event messages. However, to permanently reset a maintenance event, the actual maintenance must be performed and confirmed. Otherwise, the event will reoccur after a defined number of tap-change operations.
  • Troubleshooting Support: The system provides event messages that guide users in troubleshooting and taking countermeasures, especially for red alarm messages indicating critical issues.
