Why won't my MTD 139 cc OHV Engine start?
    • K
      Kelly CarterJul 31, 2025
Your MTD Engine might fail to start due to several reasons. It could be a disengaged blade control, which requires you to engage it. Other possible causes include a disconnected spark plug boot (connect the wire), an empty or stale fuel tank (fill with fresh gasoline), the engine not being primed (prime as instructed), a faulty spark plug (clean, adjust gap, or replace), a blocked fuel line (clean it), a flooded engine (wait a few minutes to restart without priming), a closed fuel valve (open it), the engine not being choked (choke it), or a burnt fuse if it's an electric start (replace the fuse).

If your MTD Engine is running erratically, there are several potential causes: * A loose spark plug boot: Connect and tighten the spark plug boot. * A blocked fuel line or stale fuel: Clean the fuel line and refill the tank with fresh gasoline. * A plugged vent in the gas cap: Clear the vent. * Water or dirt in the fuel system: Drain the fuel tank and refill with fresh fuel. * Running with the CHOKE applied: Put the CHOKE in the “OFF” position.
