      There are several reasons why your MTD Tiller engine might fail to start: * The spark plug wire may be disconnected. In this case, connect the wire to the spark plug. * The fuel tank may be empty or contain stale fuel. Refill the tank with clean, fresh gasoline. * The throttle control lever might not be in the correct starting position. Move the throttle lever to the start position. * The choke might not be in the ON position. Move the lever to the ON position. * The fuel line could be blocked. Clean the fuel line. * The spark plug may be faulty. Clean, adjust the gap, or replace it. * The engine may be flooding. Refer to the engine manual.

      If your MTD Tiller engine is running erratically, consider the following: * Check the spark plug wire. If it's loose, connect and tighten it. * Ensure the unit isn't running on CHOKE. Move the choke lever to OFF. * The fuel line might be blocked, or the fuel could be stale. Clean the fuel line and refill the tank with clean, fresh gasoline. * The vent may be plugged. Clear the vent. * There might be water or dirt in the fuel system. Drain the fuel tank and refill it with fresh fuel. * The air cleaner could be dirty. Clean it following the engine instructions.

Stop the tiller completely, check, and discard any foreign object. * See if any tine clevis pins are missing. Replace any missing tine clevis pins. * Inspect the belt for wear or stretching. Replace the belt if necessary. * If the pulley and idler are not in correct adjustment, take the unit to an authorized service center.
