How to troubleshoot starting issues with my MTD 410 Thru 420?
    • A
      Angela JenkinsJul 30, 2025
If your MTD Tiller's engine won't start, several factors could be at play. Start by ensuring your fuel tank isn't empty and that you're using fresh gasoline, as fuel older than thirty days can degrade without a stabilizer. Check that the throttle control lever is in the correct starting position. Also, a blocked fuel line could be the culprit, so inspect and clean it if necessary. Other potential causes include the choke not being in the ON position (make sure the switch is on), a disconnected spark plug wire (connect it securely), or a faulty spark plug (clean, adjust the gap, or replace it).

Why is my MTD Tiller engine running erratically?
    • R
      Randy WilsonAug 6, 2025
An MTD Tiller engine running erratically could stem from several issues. First, ensure the unit isn't running on CHOKE by moving the choke lever to the OFF position. Check the spark plug wire for looseness, and connect and tighten it if needed. A blocked fuel line or stale fuel can also cause this, so clean the fuel line and refill the tank with fresh gasoline, especially if the fuel is over thirty days old without a stabilizer. Additionally, check for a plugged vent in the gas cap and clear it. Water or dirt in the fuel system can also be a factor; drain the fuel tank and refill with fresh fuel.

What to do if the tines on my MTD 410 Thru 420 do not engage?
    • S
      Sheila VasquezAug 15, 2025
If the tines on your MTD Tiller aren't engaging, there might be a foreign object lodged in them; dislodge it. Also, check for missing tine clevis pins and replace them if necessary. Furthermore, replace the belt if it is worn and/or stretched. Refer to the controls section of the operator’s manual for proper shifting procedures and adjust the control cable (see assembly instructions).
