First, ensure the fuel tank isn't empty or filled with stale fuel; if so, replenish it with fresh gasoline (fuel typically lasts less than 30 days without a stabilizer). Check that the throttle control lever is in the correct starting position. Also, a blocked fuel line could be the culprit, so inspect and clean it. Confirm the choke is in the ON position and that the spark plug wire is securely connected. Lastly, the spark plug itself might be faulty, requiring cleaning, gap adjustment, or replacement.

  An MTD Tiller engine may run erratically due to several reasons. Ensure the choke lever is in the OFF position. Check the spark plug wire, and connect and tighten it if loose. A blocked fuel line or stale fuel could also be the cause; clean the fuel line and refill the tank with fresh gasoline (remember, fuel won't last beyond 30 days without a stabilizer). Additionally, a plugged vent in the gas cap or water/dirt in the fuel system might be responsible; clear the vent or drain the fuel tank and refill with fresh fuel.
