Instruction Manual AQUA kit for MA-3 Solo NIC-TD-0000187-01
Nippon Instruments Corporation 2
2. OUTLINE OF INSTRUMENT
SIMPLIFIED EXPLANATION
This unit is the option for MA-3 Solo for the measurement of extremely low concentration
liquid samples like environmental water. The mercury contained in the liquid samples is
reduced and vaporized, and then collected to the mercury collector tube. The amount of
mercury is determined by MA-3 Solo.
SAMPLING FLOW
When sulfuric acid is added to sample and then stannous chloride solution is added, bivalent
mercury ions (Hg
2+
) are reduced to zerovalent metal mercury and changed to mercury gas
by bubbling. The collection concentration is carried out selectively for the mercury gas as
gold amalgam.

*Acid mist and steam generated by bubbling are removed using a KOH solution and a mist
catcher because they obstruct a measurement.
* Although sample with small quantities of interfering substances, such as raw water for tap
water, can be measured only by adding sulfuric acid, it is impossible to obtain a precise and
accurate measurement result for sample containing interfering components.
