Overview

This document describes the B6BW Series Vertical Wall Mount Air Handler, a device designed for indoor heating and cooling applications. It is tested for capacity and efficiency in accordance with A.H.R.I. Standards, ensuring safe and dependable comfort.

Function Description

The B6BW Air Handler is a component of a heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, designed to circulate conditioned air throughout a building. It can be used for both system cooling and heating, and also features continuous blower operation for air circulation. The unit is shipped with a nitrogen holding charge, which requires careful handling during installation and servicing. It is designed to be controlled by a thermostat, allowing users to set desired temperature and fan modes (AUTO, ON, COOL, HEAT).

Important Technical Specifications

  • Model Series: B6BW Series
  • Installation Type: Vertical Wall Mount
  • Refrigerant: The evaporator coil is shipped with a nitrogen holding charge. The unit rating plate specifies the proper type and quantity of refrigerant.
  • Electrical System: Requires line voltage power, proper grounding, and circuit protection in accordance with local building codes, National Electrical Code (ANSI/NFPA 70), or Canadian Electric Code Part 1 CSA C.22.1. The transformer may have a dual voltage primary tap (24V, 208V, 230V, 240V).
  • Blower Motor: The unit features a blower motor with various speed settings (Low, Med-Low, Medium, Med-High, High) that can be configured via DIP switches or by connecting specific wires to the terminal block, depending on the unit's tonnage (1.5-2.5 ton or 3 ton units).
  • Airflow Data: Airflow performance data is provided in Table 7 (page 14) for different motor speeds and external static pressures.
  • Control Board: The control board manages the operation of the heating element, element relays, and blower motor based on thermostat signals.
  • Minimum Clearances:
    • Left Side: 0 Inches
    • Right Side: 0 Inches
    • Back: 0 Inches
    • Front: See Notes (24 in. minimum for servicing, 36 in. recommended).
    • Alcove Installations: 24 in. minimum clearance from front to nearest wall/partition for servicing (36 in. recommended).
    • Closet Installations: Require a return air grill in the door or a partially louvered door for proper air circulation. Minimum open free area of 235 in² for clearances 6" or greater, and 250 in² for clearances between 1"-5". A fully louvered closet door is strongly recommended.
  • Drain Pan: Designed with primary and secondary drain locations, requiring a trap in the primary drain line.
  • Filter Sizes:
    • B6BW-018K: 16" x 20" x 1"
    • B6BW-019K: 20" x 20" x 1"
    • B6BW-024K: 16" x 20" x 1"
    • B6BW-030K: 20" x 20" x 1"
    • B6BW-036K: 24" x 20" x 1"

Usage Features

  • Thermostat Control: The unit is operated via a thermostat, allowing users to select system modes (COOL, HEAT, OFF) and fan modes (AUTO, ON).
  • Multi-Speed Blower: The blower speed can be configured to optimize system performance and comfort for different heating and cooling demands.
  • Continuous Low Speed Fan Operation: Users can select continuous low speed fan operation for constant air circulation.
  • System Cooling: When the thermostat is set to COOL and the temperature is lowered, the blower energizes, and the air handler provides cool air.
  • System Heating: When the thermostat is set to HEAT and the temperature is raised, the blower energizes, and the air handler provides warm air.
  • Condensate Drainage: The unit includes a drain pan with primary and secondary drain locations to manage condensate. Proper installation of drain lines with a trap is crucial.
  • Residential Garage Installation: Can be installed in a residential garage, provided it is located or protected to prevent physical damage by vehicles.
  • Construction Use: Can be used for temporary heating during construction if specific criteria are met, including proper installation, thermostat control, filter use, and inspection/cleaning before occupancy.

Maintenance Features

  • Filter Access: The air filter is easily accessible from the front of the unit without tools and should be inspected frequently and replaced when necessary.
  • Blower Compartment: Regular inspection and cleaning of the blower compartment, wheel, and motor are recommended to prevent dust and lint buildup, which can lead to efficiency loss and equipment damage.
  • Drain Line Maintenance: Condensate drain lines should be checked for proper drainage to prevent blockages and potential water damage.
  • Annual Checkup: A yearly maintenance checkup by a qualified HVAC technician is recommended to ensure optimal performance and minimize equipment failure. This includes verifying thermostat installation, checking for drafts, and ensuring all doors and covers are in place.
  • Wiring Accessibility: All electrical wiring and connections should be checked periodically for tightness and correctness.
  • Component Location: Figures in the manual illustrate the location of key components such as the heating element assembly, element relay, limit switch, circuit breaker, blower motor, coil assembly, drain pan, transformer, capacitor, and control boards, aiding in maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a troubleshooting section with diagnostic descriptions for various RED LED (AN2) states (OFF, Flash, ON), indicating potential issues like control fault, blower fault, or normal operation. It also provides guidance on checking electrical power, thermostat operation, blower compartment, circuit breakers, and filters.
