Overview

This document describes the B6EW Series Vertical Wall Mount Air Handler, a device designed for indoor heating and cooling applications.

Function Description

The B6EW Series Vertical Wall Mount Air Handler is a component of a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Its primary function is to circulate air throughout a building, either for cooling (when paired with an outdoor air conditioning unit) or heating (using an integrated heating element). The unit is designed for vertical wall-mounted installation and is shipped with a nitrogen holding charge to maintain coil integrity. It features a multi-speed blower for adjustable airflow and can be configured for continuous low-speed fan operation.

Important Technical Specifications

The B6EW Series air handlers come in various models, including X18K, X24K, X25K, X30K, and X36K, which correspond to different capacities and physical dimensions.

  • Refrigerant Connections: All models use 3/4" suction diameter and 3/8" liquid diameter connections.
  • Supply Air Duct Dimensions:
    • X18K, X24K, X25K, X30K models: 9 x 17 1/4 inches.
    • X36K model: 15 x 17 1/4 inches.
  • Physical Dimensions (Approximate "A" and "B" measurements):
    • X18K, X24K models: A = 36 3/8 inches, B = 9 1/2 inches.
    • X25K, X30K models: A = 43 1/2 inches, B = 9 1/2 inches.
    • X36K model: A = 43 1/2 inches, B = 15 1/2 inches.
  • Electrical: The unit requires 240/208 Volt operation. It includes a transformer (24V) and circuit breakers (60A). Electrical connections must comply with the National Electrical Code (NEC) ANSI/NFPA 70 in the US or the Canadian Electrical Code CSA C22.1 in Canada.
  • Refrigerant Type: The unit uses R-410A refrigerant.
  • Airflow Data: Airflow is shown in CFM, +/- 5%. External static pressure is shown in inches W.C. All airflow data is provided for both with and without a filter and with a dry coil. For filter, subtract .08" external static pressure. For wet coil, subtract .1" external static pressure.
  • Minimum Circuit Ampacity & Maximum Overcurrent Protection (MCA/MOP): These values vary by model and total kW, ranging from 29.8 to 54.8 MCA and 30 to 60 MOP.
  • Heating Elements: The unit can be equipped with heating elements of various kW ratings (e.g., 5 kW, 8 kW, 10 kW).

Usage Features

  • Thermostat Control: The unit is controlled by a thermostat with modes for OFF, ON (continuous blower), AUTO (blower cycles with heating/cooling), COOL, and HEAT.
  • Blower Speed Configuration: The blower speed is factory preset but can be adjusted using DIP switches on the control board to optimize system performance and comfort. There are five speed motor terminals (M1-M5) corresponding to different airflow rates (Low, Medium Low, Medium, Medium Hi, Hi speed).
  • Continuous Low Speed Fan Operation: The air handler supports continuous low-speed fan operation. When the "G" terminal is energized without "Y/Y2", the unit operates at the cooling speed. If "G" and "Y/Y2" or "Y/Y2" are energized, it operates at the selected cooling speed with a 40-second blower-off delay.
  • Installation Flexibility: The unit can be mounted vertically on a wall or recessed between framing studs. It is designed for indoor installations only.
  • Condensate Drainage: The unit includes primary and secondary drain connections for proper condensate removal. It is crucial to ensure proper drainage to prevent water damage.

Maintenance Features

  • Filter Replacement: The unit requires regular filter replacement. Filter sizes vary by model (e.g., 16" x 20" x 1", 20" x 20" x 1", 24" x 20" x 1"). Dirty or clogged filters can lead to excessive loads on the motor and reduced performance.
  • Coil Cleaning: The evaporator coil should be inspected and cleaned periodically to maintain efficiency.
  • Drain Pan and Tubes Maintenance: Regular inspection and cleaning of the drain pan and tubes are necessary to prevent blockages and ensure proper condensate drainage.
  • Electrical Connections Check: Periodically, electrical connections should be checked for tightness and corrosion.
  • Blower Motor and Assembly Inspection: The blower wheel, motor, and assembly should be inspected for dirt, lint, and proper lubrication.
  • Refrigerant Charge: If repairs necessitate evacuation and charging, it must be performed by qualified, trained personnel. The unit is shipped with a nitrogen holding charge that must be purged before evacuation and charging with R-410A refrigerant.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues, including the blower not turning on, the unit not operating, and the circuit breaker being tripped. It also includes a table for control board fault conditions indicated by LED (AN2) status.
