Overview

The Olympus AIR A01 is an interchangeable lens digital camera designed to be controlled primarily by a smartphone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. It functions as a compact camera body that can be attached to a smartphone, allowing users to leverage their phone's screen as a viewfinder and control interface.

Function Description

The core function of the Olympus AIR A01 is to capture high-quality still pictures and movies. It utilizes a Micro Four Thirds mount, enabling compatibility with a wide range of Micro Four Thirds lenses. The camera features an Imager AF system for autofocus and an Imager metering system for exposure control. It supports JPEG (DCF-compatible) and RAW formats for still pictures, and MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 for movies with Stereo, PCM 48kHz audio.

The camera's operation is heavily reliant on its dedicated smartphone app, OA.Central, which needs to be installed on the user's smartphone. Initial setup involves establishing a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection between the camera and the smartphone. Once connected, the smartphone acts as the primary control interface for various camera settings, including image size, and for viewing the live feed from the camera.

Physical controls on the camera body include a Shutter Button for capturing images, an ON/OFF button for power, and a Lens Release Lever for detaching lenses. An LED Illuminator provides visual feedback on the camera's status, such as charging, errors, or sleep mode.

The Olympus AIR A01 is designed for portability and flexibility. It can be attached to a smartphone using the AIR coupling, which features an adjustment lever to fit various smartphone sizes. A hand strap can be attached to the AIR coupling for secure handling. The camera also includes a tripod socket for mounting on tripods or other supports.

Usage Features

  • Smartphone Integration: The primary usage feature is the seamless integration with a smartphone. Users can attach their smartphone to the AIR coupling, transforming their phone into a sophisticated camera controller with a large display.
  • Interchangeable Lenses: The Micro Four Thirds mount allows users to experiment with different lenses, offering versatility for various photographic styles and situations, from wide-angle landscapes to telephoto portraits.
  • Wireless Connectivity: Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enable remote control and image transfer to the smartphone, facilitating quick sharing and post-processing. Bluetooth Smart ensures efficient power consumption for connection.
  • Dedicated App (OA.Central): The OA.Central app provides a comprehensive interface for controlling camera settings, live view, and image management. It simplifies complex camera operations through a familiar smartphone interface.
  • Charging: The camera is charged via a micro USB connector, which can be connected to a computer using the supplied USB cable or to a USB-AC adaptor (sold separately) for faster charging. The LED illuminator indicates charging status.
  • microSD Card Storage: Images and videos are stored on a microSD card. The camera supports UHS-I compatible cards. Users need to insert the card correctly and ensure it's not write-protected.
  • Power Management: The camera features energy-saving functions, including a sleep mode and an auto-off timer, to conserve battery life. The LED illuminator flashes slowly in green when in sleep mode.
  • Error Indicators: The LED illuminator also serves as a warning system, blinking orange to indicate various issues such as a missing or problematic microSD card, full card, lens error, or high internal camera temperature.
  • Network Settings Reset: Users can reset network settings to their factory defaults by following a specific procedure involving the ON/OFF button, shutter button, and lens release lever.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning the Camera Body: The outer parts of the Olympus AIR A01 can be gently wiped with a soft, damp cloth. For very dirty areas, a cloth soaked in mild soapy water and well-wrung can be used, followed by drying with a dry cloth. After beach use, a cloth soaked in clean, well-wrung water is recommended.
  • Lens Cleaning: Dust can be removed from the lens using a commercially available blower. For gentle cleaning, a lens cleaning paper can be used.
  • Storage: For long-term storage, it is recommended to fully charge the camera, turn off the radio switch, and store it in a cool, dry location to prevent condensation or mold. The battery should be charged at least once every six months, and the camera's functions should be periodically tested.
  • Body Cap and Lens Caps: Always attach the body cap when no lens is attached to prevent dust from entering the camera. Similarly, front and rear lens caps should be used when storing lenses.
  • Image Pickup Device: To clean the image pickup device area, a commercially available blower can be used to blow away dust from within the mount. It is crucial not to touch internal parts like the lens signal contact. Spray-type blowers should be avoided as they may damage the camera.
  • Battery Care: The camera uses a non-replaceable lithium-ion battery. Users should ensure the battery is charged when the LED blinks blue or green, indicating a missing battery or low charge.
  • Environmental Considerations: The manual advises against using or storing the camera in dusty, humid, or extremely hot/cold environments, near flammable items, or in places prone to strong vibrations. It also warns against direct sunlight exposure to the lens or viewfinder, which can cause damage.
  • Firmware Updates: Olympus provides software updates, which can be obtained from their website, to ensure optimal performance and address any potential issues.
